I want to get a laptop for my wife. I have a nicely configured Vostro for $624 shipped with tax: 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 120GB HDD, 1280x800 True Life, 2GB RAM, 8400 GS.
But a similar configured Inspiron 1520 costs about $200 more than that. However, I can get: 1.66GHz C2D, 160GB HDD, 8600m GT, 1280x800 Ture Life, 1GB RAM (will add 2GB myself) for $834 + $100 gift card back.
If I go with the 8400 GS, it drops the price below the $899 threshhold, so it costs more... lol.
whatever.
Now what to do? Spend the extra $200 and get a $100 gift card and get more PC than what she needs, or just spend the $634 and get what she needs, but knowing I could have gotten a much better deal?
Oh well..

If she's not gaming...or anyone not gaming at all period...don't bother a graphics card. As in get the 8400m GS.
More battery life. -
u could even get a cheaper compaq if she does not play games, actually even the cheapest of laptops would be ok if theres absolutely no gaming and no vista
-
Haha,
I was in the same exact position as you yesterday. I didn't want to wait "6-8" weeks for the gift card and didn't want to over do her comp. Ordered the Vostro last night. -
Yeah Vostro may be the way to go, but why are Inspirons usually $200 more, regardless of what promotion is going on, with the same equipment? I'd like to get her an Inspirion for the "look". I could care less, and love my Vostro, but she'd be happy with a color coded notebook and not all black. Oh well I think $200 speaks for itself. I can buy a can of spray paint! lol
Most of the brick and mortar store el cheapo laptops are for ****. Sure it costs $450 but it only has a single core CPU, 80GB HDD, and 512MB or 1GB RAM. She does multitask, has a music library, and does some complicated MS Office stuff too, so I wouldn't want to go with the cheapest lappie out there.
It would essentially replace her desktop PC which is an Athlon64 3500+ (single core), 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, ATI Xpress 200 onboard graphics. -
Maybe you can get her the 1420/1400 instead
or will that be even more expensive?
Anyway, from your post, I think you should get her the Vostro. Unless you really don't want to have [essentially] the same laptops
Why oh why do Dell do this? Vostro vs. Inspiron $200 Difference
