I received a replacement optical drive this week for my Vostro 1400. I have some issues burning DVD's but it was a software problem. So now I have 2 working optical drives for my laptop.
-Pioneer DVD+-RW DR-K17Y ATA device (came with my laptop)
-Phillips & BenQ DVD+-RW DS-8W1P (shipped replacement part)
Which one should I keep?
Is one of them better than the other?
Which one do you have?

i don't know it its it suppose to be like this but when i play a DVD my drive roars is it a problem???
-
PBDS DVD +-RW DS-8W1P (no RPC1 firmware available either)
This drive doesn't recognize a big % of the media out there.
Also no firmware update at dell.com. + it is LOUD!
I am trying to get mine replaced. -
I have optiarc. is it a cheap stuff?

My 1420 comes with:
1420, HITACHI LG DATA STORAGE in invoice
List as:
HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-T21N ATA Device in Device Manager -
Anyone know what the Lite-On equivalent model # would be for the PBDS (Philips & BenQ Digital Storage) DS-8W1P? That's the one that came in my Vostro 1500, and it just recently stopped burning past 10%. I figured a firmware flash might be worth a shot.

vostro 1400 with toshiba samsung
TSSTcorp CDRWDVD TSL462D
it's a combo -
Originally had a Sony NEC Optiarc AD-5560AD = excellent reader/ripper, trouble burning DVD (guessing bad laser power control)
Got 5 PBDS DVD+-RW DS-8W1P: Pure crap, summary as follows:
First & Second: read errors with DVDs
Third & Fourth: Never tried, since I was supposed to get a Pioneer or NEC drive
Fifth: No read errors, burned a test DVD and did a Quality Scan with Nero, result 25/100, wouldn't read in other drives
Call to tech support again, asked for a Pioneer or NEC, got a HL-DT-ST (HLDS) GSA-T21N = very quiet and burns alright (QS ~90%), but has rip-lock and cannot do QS in Nero (used a different drive to get my result). At this point its not worth my time talking to Dell anymore. -
You mentioned that your problem was due to software. I am having problems trying to burn something to a DVD. It is saying the DVD+R is a CD and it wont let me burn anything to it. it is the TSST corp model.

i have tried NEC-6650A(with rpc1 firmware) on 1400 and it works fine.
