^ wondering since it is designed for xp.

It is designed to run x86-64 code. XP is x86 code, Linux is either x86 or x86-64 code depending on the distro, and Vista is x86 or x86-64 code.
Short version: yes. -
I will give my two cents. Are you able to run vista? Yes. Is it a good idea? Personally I like XP better, my co-worker who travel with me quiet often owns a D820 and he recently upgraded to vista business. And it slowed down the performance for at least 15-20%, he end up spending an additional 200 dollars to upgrade the RAM to 2GB. Worst part is vista is not compatible with our company financial software, so he end up format the C: drive and re-install XP. So I say save the trouble, and stay with XP until Microsoft release its service packs.

I put a clean install of Vista basic on my 6400 with 512 ram and it works great. Faster than I thought it would be.
-
It isn't slow and choppy with only 512 ram? -
I donot like vista at all. Campablility issues, slow, ass- A hole.
-
Where does it say designed for XP ?? Are you talking about that sticker pasted on the notebook ? Then don't worry about it. They are just marketing slogans. Even a Pentium 3 can run Vista. Therefore an Inspiron 6400 with a Core or Core 2 will run Vista just fine.
If its any consolation, the sticker also says Vista capable right ?

List your specs and we can tell you how WELL Vista will run on your 6400.

um t5300 with 1 gig of ram but might upgrade to 2 gig. I think im gonna wait though for santa rosa

iF U R INTO GAMING THEN IT WOULD REQUIRE 2 GB RAM FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE....I HAD A DELL 6400...WITH 2 GB..RAM....
WORKED GREAT FOR ME....While for other things like movies, internet...it wont be problem -
Just my 2 gigs worth. Dont run vista without it.
Why does my D600 with a 1.6/512 boot XP faster than my 6400 with dual 1.73/2gigs boots vista? -
your 6400 probably are running 100 applications at start up with vista installed
Will Dell Insprino 6400 run vista properly
