Not being stupid here - but Circuit City is having a Gateway Laptop with a 160GB HDD, 2GB of RAM and a DVD Burner for 599 with no rebates.
My Dell I got only has 512MB of RAM, 120GB HDD (Not a big deal there) and a CD Burner/DVD-ROM. Part of me wants to cancel this due to the difference in the RAM and the DVD-RW in this other notebook, since that was another $175 on the Vostro1400
If I Called Dell, is there any chance they would price match that other system and add the RAM and DVD-RW?
If not, I might have to cancel the order.. the other price is just too good to pass up

There's no way in hell they'll price match.
However, if you call up Dell for a quote on a system. I've found that if you slip in the fact that you're just looking around the market at that point. And even if you mention a few other systems you've seen from competitors, they'll be more willing to give discount. -
Post your 1400 config and what you paid for it.

LOL sorry but that made me laugh

well the wife needs a new system. that sounds like it may work for her what are the specs of the gateway if you could.. thanks

And as mentioned, PM'ing only works if its the same notebook, so unless it's at, Costco or something, then it won't work. -
Sorry, but that's too funny :>

Actually, my Dell small business rep has told me multiple times that company policy is to never lose a sale due to price alone, and that they will match specifications and pricing on fair comparisons to other brand products.
Also, I know that Gateway is not nearly as popular as they once were, but I wouldn't say their product is of any lesser quality than the the lower end Dell lines. -
Lucky RAM, Hardrive size and the presence of an optical drive are the only things to think about then.
Go for it! -
I was configuring a M1330 last Thursday and it was a bit pricey for me because I could get a similiar Toshiba Satellite Pro U300 for $1299.99+tax while configuring a Dell would about about $2000+tax (this is in Canadian dollars). When I made my comparison, the Dell rep and talked to his supervisor and knocked off $100 plus some other perks (free shipping, 3 year warranty including Complete, free fingerprint reader upgrade, and some other discount). I didn't end up ordering but the final price I bargained down to was$1908.12 including taxes. So yes, it is possible to do some price matching.
Will Dell Price Match competiters?
