    Hi there...
just wondering what the experience has been here. I've recently bought a used Inspiron 9400 but original owner only had receipt and no discs. Will Dell ship to me if I provide the service tag, receipt info, etc, or am I out of luck because i'm not the original owner.

Other question...my laptop came installed with XP Home...and all the Dell crap as well...anyway to get up to MCE or XP Pro from Dell without paying full billing?

Any ideas here greatly appreciated. Unfortunately for last owner and me he bought this laptop weeks before the free Vista upgrade options.

    Thanks
    Steph

It shouldn't be an issue. Call them up. If you unit is still under warranty (and the warranty was TRANSFERRED) then there shouldn't be a charge. Otherwise, Dell might charge you a fee to mail your the discs.

Well i have the service tag but no the warranty was not officially transfered. I can probably call the guy up to do that, although on the Dell site i was able to see how many days left in the 1 year warranty based on the service tag. Is it being formally transfered a necesity>?

    Thanks
    Steph

Yes, but you can do it yourself at support.dell.com. As long as you have both the Service Tag and Express Service Number (the two numbers found on the sticker underneath the notebook) you have all you need.

thanks for the help. It asked for the service tag...which was a required field, and the order number, which was not required. I left the latter blank. We'll see I guess.

Nowhere asked for the express service number though....?

    Thanks for the help.

I have a weird story, I have a M1210 that I bought from a re-seller off ebay. I had screen issues and they replaced it under warranty. I called to try and buy the extended warranty, and they said I was not listed as the owner. And they couldn't do anything for me due to confidentiality.

So they came to my house already to repair at no cost, but still I am not listed as the owner...

    Anyway...

Does it really take 30 days for the owner transfer? I was hoping to call them and try to get this settled soon...

Also if anyone knows which Warranty covers hardware, that would be cool... they have so many names for all their warranty's.

The warranty transfer can take up to 30 days. If you are in the states you're not required to have the previous owner's address. The warranty migh covers hardware and depending on it, it might also cover accidental damages.
