    If DELL has used a modular daughter board for 1720 and will make the 8700/8800 in the same format, yes.
    If the GPU is soldered on the mobo or the daughter boards are not compatible, no.

    The Vostro 1500 service manual clearly show the discrete graphics module as an upgradable part. I fully expect that better graphics cards can be installed.

    i have a feeling that it will go like this in the future
    1520 = 8600M GT
    1720 = 8700M GT
    New XPS = 8800M GT

    If it doesnt then dell haver got some explianing to do! :)

    Even if they are modular, I doubt putting a 8800 in a 8700/8600 slot will work.. Mainly due to the power requirements.. The 8800 will come out in a MXM III slot, while the other two will be MXM II slot cards.. 35 and 22 watts respectively.. Of course, Dell has a proprietary design for their graphics boards, but the power specifications should approximately be the same as their MXM counterparts...

    Where can you find the service manual for the dells?

    EDIT: I found it in the manual section of my Inspiron 1720 page... now to see schematics, lol :p

    The 8700 is just a faster clocked 8600.

    ^yes

    you've told us that twice now

    and upgrading laptop vid cards are expensive.

    and the upgrade for the 1705 to 7950gtx isn't what a normal upgrade should be

    that upgrade required cutting parts of the notebook (and some soldering i think) and will definitely void any kind of warrenty

    Ummm, last i herd, wasnt the 8700 a mxm III not II? Im fairly certain so. Hardware wise its CORE is "just an overclocked 8600gt" but its chip is a little differently configured, preticuarly the ram, making for a sligtly larger chip-not to mention allowing for it to actualy be cooled, if i recall right 22-25w was the max despersion of MXM II, whereas MXM III goes to about 35w...

    ^.^ So, i suppose techicaly upgrading from 8700-->8800(lowest of the 8800 atleast) should... be theoreticaly plausible. Especialy since in theory theyre supposed to significnatly drop on scale wattage use.(Thanks to the nm drop) Will dell make a moduel that makes it actualy possible... good luck.

    anyone have any guess as to when the 8700 is coming out, I want to order my 1720 but if it'll show up 2 weeks later and the 8700 comes out I'll be pissed.
