    Hi,

I have a 7900GS video card in my E1705 which has had issues with small dots, lines (artifacts). The BIOS screen is screwy, it shows the screen, but not completely, however, I can boot into safe mode. When going to boot to Vista, I get the infamous "blue screen of death" (probably not due to Microsoft's fault on this one !!), and asks me to remove shadowing options etc.

I did run diagnostics from within the BIOS, it gets through system checks okay, then system memory checks okay, through DVDRW checks and finally when it gets to the video card..and beeps constantly with an error message.

Basically the video card in my E1705 is shot and lookin' for one I ran into a pretty good deal on Ebay for a D810 video card. Auction # 160247805756

The card seems like it would fit and is a Quadro FX1400 so might even be better than original.

    Anyone try this??

Thanks in advance for your response.

Maybe...no guarantee. The 7900GS is the best card you'll find for that series of notebook, all others WILL be a downgrade including the D810 card you are looking at.

Greg...I really don't care for the performance all that much..not much of a gamer, but did like the way 7900GS zipped along including 3d solids modeling, web pages and such ; but don't want to spend too much if I can avoid it for a 2 year old laptop that's depreciating daily...not worth the $ 1700 from 2 years ago.

Can someone confirm if it would work??

Also, the option is to use a ATI X1400; but that for sure would be a severe downgrade.

i don't know about that exact quadro, but i know an fx2500m found its way into an xps m1710, which is fairly similar to the e1705, minus a plastic tab or two which allows for two vents instead of one. so i'd say its possible, but find a 7800 or a 7900 to make life easier and more certain. if you don't play games or don't live and die by just specs and wanting higher numbers, find and ati x300

bravo...when you say X300 card, you are referring to the ATI 64MB card X300 used with Inspiron 9300s...that would be a further downgrade than X1400 wouldn't it??...I was trying to get the D810 or M70 card ; a slight downgrade from the 7900GS....

    Any other thoughts....

The most powerful D810 option was about as powerful as a X1400...so I'm pretty sure you are screwed either way. You might get a pulled 17" Latitude GPU and that might work well...all the 15.4" Latitudes I know of have weak GPUs.

Greg...oh, okay...I see...thanks for clarifying the fact that "I am screwed"...LOL...you should see what my wife's been sayin' about what I did to the laptop...it's always my fault !!!...screwed is an understatement !!!

Maybe, I'll look into a X1400 and call it a day...atleast the damn thing would be fixed..unless you know where I might get a really good deal on a 7900GS or simlar.
