I heard that those manufacturers are very good at quality control...I mean I heard people say that lots of laptop die just right after the warranty expires.

My computer is almost turned on all the time(I put the computer to sleep for around 8 hours a day), and I transport it every weekday.

Can anyone estimate how long will this machine last?

    Thanks.

Unless you get a dud (in which case, it'll probably fail soon enough to be fixed under warranty), there's no reason the machine shouldn't last several years or more. You can always buy an extended warranty if you're worried about it...

If you can afford it, get a 2 year warranty at least. My Studio 1555 had the standard one year warranty, and about two months after it expired, my motherboard died and now I'm out $1,000.

Having it mobile every day is going to be more stressful than having it on a desk most of its life. You may want to look into the extra warranty or even accidental coverage if you plan on keeping it a long time.

    Thanks for your advice.
I guess I will get some extra warranty to make it run another two years.

I can tell you that my previous Inspiron was used 8-10 hours a day, and so is this one. Neither have had any issues due to this.

The issues I've had with this Inspiron is dead pixels, but meh, sometimes that happens with expensive machines; and a dead optical drive - but again, that happens anyway due to wear and tear. I put my machines through a lot, and they've not really failed big time yet.

However, I always buy the extended warranty anyway. It's cheaper than a new machine.

its unlikely it'll die within a year, consumer grade units in my experience last 2-3 years under heavy use. if you just leave it on a table most of the time they can last 6 years or more!

Man that sucks, didn't you used to have a malfunctioning 1537 that you were finally able to get them to replace after much hassle?

I've beaten the crap out of my Vostro 1500 for three years-It's still going strong.

In my mind, thermal management is key (Proper heatsinking, etc.)

It was a 1535, but yeah. After five touch-sensitive media panel replacements, two DVD drive replacements, and a motherboard replacement, Dell finally caved and realized that that thing just wasn't going to eject disks, so they sent me a refurbished 1555.

I'm sorry to hear that. What brand of laptop are you looking to get next seeing all the problems you've had with Dell.

Honestly, I would not have any problems getting a Dell again, except I would make sure to definitely get a 2 or 3 year warranty next time. Their computers are fantastic...when they work. :p

I've also been looking into Asus, particularly the G60VX and the G72GX.
