I was wondering how much upgrading the m1530 lcd to the high end 1680x1050 monitor would affect gaming performance? Anyone know any web sites that ran tests or have any input?

If you play the games at the LCD's native resolution, the gaming performance will be significantly lowered. It takes more power to render the graphics at 1680x1050 resolution than at 1280x800. You could opt to run games at 1280x800 resolution, but it wouldn't look as good because it would be "stretched" to fill the 1680x1050. If you want a higher resolution, the 1440x900 option is a good compromise since 1280x800 won't look as stretched.

Why would the middle lcd option make them not look stretched? why is that a concern? I would always leave the laptop at native res which is why I am concerned because I want the highest res possible but I don't want gaming performance to suffer.

Lower resolutions = better gaming performance
resolution will always take a toll on gaming

i game at 1440 by 900 and sacrifice graphic quality to do so, i belive it looks better then the stretched image ( which some people including my self HATE)

so are you saying 1440x900 does NOT stretch games? Isn't it a widescreen resolution though?

Why would 1440x900 be better for gaming than the higher 1680x1050 one?

The middle LCD option will still stretch the image if the game is running at 1280x800, it just won't look as bad as the 1680x1050 option. You're going to get the best gaming performance at 1280x800, so if you want to leave the laptop at native res, the best option is 1280x800. The other option would be 1440x900, it should run some games just fine at that resolution, but in the future some games may need to be turned down to 1280x800 to run properly.

One of the reasons I was apprehensive about the 1440x900 screen is because of the decreased performance of graphics with higher resolution. I would rather have had that and gamed with lower settings, though, than be stuck with the 1280x800 I have now. It's still a good screen and I'm still happy.

Thanks Zahn. You've convinced me to go up to the 1440x900 res. Getting ready to pull the trigger with this great deal on jan 2nd when my work reimbursement kicks in for the new year! So glad the big sale lasts until end of jan.

Im wondering if there will be more coupons coming out before the big -669 sale ends.

Possibly more coupons. After all, I imagine that Dell is eager to offload a lot of their Santa Rosa components in preparation for Penryn and Montevina.

Plus, computer hardware is dirt cheap right now, especially in terms of bang for the buck. Now is the best time to buy.

Intel is practically giving away their 65nm stuff. DDR2-667 SO-DIMM and DDR2-800 SDRAM is really cheap. Once DDR3 becomes standard and Intel drops to 45nm, things are gonna spike in price for a marginal performance increase.

Does anyone have any screenshots of games (ut3 esp.) running 1280x800 on 1440x900 native res and 1680x1050 res? I was ready to get 1680x1050 for the extra real estate, but if its gonna adversely affect gaming much (I plan on gaming quite a bit) then maybe I should drop to 1440x900.

Doesn't look bad at all, but what is your native resolution? To truly see the difference I'd need two screenshots with the exact same settings, except they have to be on two different native resolutions. Dunno if anyone can do that

i'd say for WXGA to WSXGA+ ur frames would prolly half (well maybe not that much)...but u'd have a very signicicant decrease in performance

Yes I know that, but I'm trying to gage the difference in performance if I have a LCD with WSXGA+ native and play on WXGA, and then another LCD with WXGA+ native res and play on WXGA. Would the differences be noticeable, you know, due to that stretching effect of not playing on native resolution. If it's significant, then I might opt for WXGA+ rather than WSXGA+ native res.

that's the native resolution, 1280x800. I wonder how its looks on a 1440x900 native resolution 1530
