    Hi,

Would most people on here recommend going for XP? I don't see a huge advantage with DX10 and I'll be running most stuff in DX9 anyway so is there any other reason togo for vista other than DX10? I know vista looks really nice but as i'm using a laptop and not a desktop i prefer performance rather than quality, if you know what i mean... roughly how much of a performance difference is there between vista and xp, on say a vostro 1500 2ghz, 2gb, 8600?

I chose Vista Business when I ordered my Vostro 1400. With this version you can downgrade to XP at your leisure (as long as you can get your hands on a Windows XP CD). This way if vista makes some sort of miracle transformation with SP1 you can go back without having to worry. That was my reasoning at least.

You can get an idea for Vista's performance from this article on AnandTech: http://www.anandtech.com/systems/showdoc.aspx?i=2917&p=12

There isn't a HUGE difference and I have the feeling that if you turn off the Aero interface the difference would be even less. Since I have yet to receive my own Vostro (shipping today woo!) I can't give you a real-world comparison yet. I hope this helps!

I'll probably go for Vista then cos the compatability and performance can only get better, I know how good XP is now but Vista is something I have no idea about but if you could let me know how you get on I'd be thankful :D

Large part of the reason I went with a Vostro is because I could get XP on it. I'll give Vista a whirl in 4 years.

My 1520 came with Vista pre-installed, so the first thing I did was a clean non-bloatware Vista install and set up a dual-boot situation Vista/XP so I could have the best of both worlds. I soon noticed how much faster XP is than Vista even with Vista set to performance mode. Other than being the only OS with DX10 built in (which barely works yet), there is no reason I can think of to switch. I eventually decided that 20 Vista OS gigs on my HD could be spent on better things, and wiped it from my system. Honestly, after using both Vista and XP, I can't for the life of me see why MS decided we needed a new OS other than the fact that everyone already has XP and they need more money.

If anyone can give me a real reason to use Vista over XP, I'm all ears. Until then, I'll be using XP, cause it works and works well.

I was originally going to go with XP but changed my mind and went with Vista. Although it might not be as stable, I wanted to give this new OS that everyone is talking about (albeit negative talk) a try. If worse comes to worse, I can always reinstall XP.

i recently got my vostro 1500 with vista ultimate pre installed. after removing all the dell crap its not too bad. boots quite fast. the thing is i know for a fact that this laptop would run xp 10 times quicker than vista. i think its such a shame that vista kills even high spec machines cos i really love the way it looks. but i bought i powerfull laptop so i could reap the benefits that come with it. the dispaointing thing is vista doesn't let ppl lget the most out of there hardware. so im gonna do clean install of xp pro this weekend before starting uni on monday. might try vista again after SP1 but doubt it. id rather just have SP3 for xp :p

edit: oh and btw my vostro 1500 is same spec as yours t7300 2.0, 2gb ram, 8600gt etc.

I don't want to take part in public BETA testing of Vista. I will go for this system in 2-3 years. Maybe. People really do need new systems. Better concentrate how to maximise XP and appreciate performance.

A big selling point to me on the Vostro 1500 was the XP option. I will go with Vista down the road. Probably 3 years or so though. XP meets my needs and is much more solid IMO.

Dell uses XP, not Vista, in their own office. I think that says it all

I use Vista...I can't really tell you why. It is much prettier than XP, but XP does everything better.

after reading loads of comments on this argument i was sure i was gonna format my vostro 1500 with xp this weekend. nokw ive decided to stick with vista. reasons being it runs pretty fast once you mess about with it abit, also it runs every program i use flawlessly (so far...) one of my most important programs is vmware and it works straight off and has a windows server vm and an ubuntu one. and while installing these vista was still running extremely smoothly. on my pc it would have definately slowed down some but this laptop didn't break a sweat. i think thats more because of the hardware in the laptop than vista though.

i have one minor quibble with vista though does anyone know how to get task manager to open when you press ctrl alt dlt instead of that stupid menu?

I also bought the 1500 because it had the XP option. Also recently bought a non-Dell desktop from a shop that could give me XP. I won't worry about Vista until I need some hardware that requires Vista and that could be a long time coming.

I got XP Pro. I don't like vista and all it's memory hogging crap.
