Has anyone had a successful install of W2k on this machine? Having trouble getting the SD to install, works under XP, audio seems to be shakey at best. Kinda like pissin' in the wind...

Why would you want to do that? Win 2k was horrible. I had Win 2k on my Latitude and I couldn't believe the difference when I reformatted to XP. It was actually a lot faster, more stable, and a lot more reliable. I would just stick to XP Pro if I were you.

Before trying to install 2Wk (a fantastic OS IMHO) you need to research all of the drivers at Dell. Make sure there are W2K drivers available for everything before going forward. If Dell doesn't supply W2K drivers, you won't be able to install W2K.

Remember that the new Dell laptops were designed with XP in mind. There may be a few pitfalls that require indepth troubleshooting if you want to install W2K. You'll definitely want to download all of the recent W2K updates and install them immediately after installing W2K w/SP4. Follow SouthernGirl's reinstall guide for the correct order of driver installation.

Win2k is great for weak laptops; kinda pointless on an e1705, specially since dell provides all the discs/etc. Why would you need win2k?

I do agree with people here, I think it really is pointless trying to go back to Win 2k. Unless you have a very special needs.

Win2k becomes less and less favorable each year. I too loved win2k, but late SP1 and SP2, xp surpassed it in almost every way. Laptops, its even worse because the hardwares win2k drivers are only an after thought after the xp ones. Todays laptops most likely wouldnt have win2k drivers. Performance wise, I actually started having stuttering issues in games like WoW and Need for speed underground 1 and 2 caused by win2k, wich dissapeared when I moved to winxp.
