I have been thinking of installing Windows 7 on my Studio 1535 and, at the same time, moving from 32 bit to 64 bit computing. Trouble is that I'll need more ram, so I at least need to buy a two gigabyte stick of ram, and I would probably like to get a dedicated sound card at the same time.

Thus, I come looking for any advice on upgrading and what particular items one might recommend for the aforementioned products and, equally important, any experiences that one might have on switching to Windows 7.

Of course, all discussion of Windows 7 is welcome.

AFAIK even 2GB will be enough for Win7 from my experience on the 32bit version of Win7 on my 1535. The idle usage averages to 1GB with chrome, FF, WMP, uTorrent, RMClock and NOD32

I gave a call to the tech support and they said that the most my laptop could handle was 4GB of DDR2 at 800mhz, so at least upgrades are simple though not quite in the scope I had hoped for.

Once I get the extra ram, I'll go ahead and install it and give some feedback on how it goes.

A bit off topic, but if anyone knows of any good sound cards available, do tell!

Very nice. I myself have just installed 64 bit Windows 7 on my Studio 1537. I duel booted it with Windows XP, with Windows 7 being my primary. I figured XP should be around 'just in case'. I have documented all my experiences with Windows 7 and XP installation on the Studio 1537 on a Google Sites page http://sites.google.com/site/dellstudio15info I'm curious what you're running in the system tray? Also, I have 1 unidentified device in both XP and Windows 7. I'm almost certain I've installed drivers for every known piece of hardware (wifi, bluetooth, video card, infrared, hdmi audio, sound, fingerprint, camera, etc.) did you figure it out on your laptop?

I had the same problem with the infrared ... installing the official drivers didn't help, but I found if I updated the device manually by pointing to C:\dell\drivers\R196531\INFDrv\64OS it found the drivers and worked

I installed Windows 7 on my new 1555 and I love it. Though it is most likely not necessary, I'd advise upgrading your RAM. It's quite cheap nowadays. I have 4 GB in mine and it runs very well.

7 found almost all the drivers I needed. I think it was only the Quickset and touchpad drivers I had to get.

Are your video drivers up to date? Are you running an ATI or integrated video?

Most Win 7 drivers are simply Vista drivers. Try the Vista drivers for the 1537 for anything that's not working.

Well, I made the big upgrade and so far, so good.

Everything has been smooth sailing except for the fact that 7 doesn't detect my Dell Bluetooth Mouse. I've hit the little blue button and told it to add device, but no 'dise. Also, my install discs are back at my dorm, so no help there.

Still, I will say that anyone who can upgrade to 64bit 7 should.
