So, as per my signature, I have a E1705 with an 80GB hard drive. It took me three years to fill that guy up with XP. Still have XP buy the way.

Was considering purchasing a new laptop with a 128GB SSD. Would love to go higher ... too rich for my blood.

I was wondering if folks here could give me feed back as to when they received their Windows 7 laptop from Dell ... how much space did that occupy?

    Thanks ...

Win 7 Ultimate is about 9 GB at moment.

I think Home premium is still around 8GB

if others want, all you do is open C drive and click properties of Windows folder to get an Idea.

I would say 10 to 12 gb to include programs folder.

XP ( inferior in many ways) SP 3 was around 1.5 GB when I installed it on my Daughter's older laptop.

    Perfect!

I was thinking if it was as high as 40GB, I would probably still go with the 128GB SSD. At 10GB (+-) the SSD should last me a good long time ... at least long enough (2/3 years at least) for them to drop in price and move up if I need to.

    Thanks for the feedback!

I strongly recommend a clean install. Windows 7 installs quickly, and the time to get all the drivers on takes less than 2 hours.

2.5 hours is worth a faster and better experience using your computer!
