I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 RC over Vista on my inspiron 1520. Windows 7 appeared to automatically install the correct drivers for everything except the graphics card, as everything else appeared to be working properly (e.g. wireless, scrollpad, etc.) After manually downloading and installing the NVidia driver, the aero stuff started to work.

However shortly afterwards, I noticed that the left side of my screen seemed slightly dimmer than the rest of the screen. The problem gets even worse, as the backlight would suddenly turn off after shorter and shorter periods. I thought maybe the windows 7 drivers were incompatible with my the laptop, so I uninstalled windows 7 and installed Vista back along with the original drivers, but that didn't fix the problem.

Anyway, I called up Dell, and got someone to come fix my laptop. Apparently, some cable and back light controller were damaged so they replaced them, and everything seems to be working fine again.

I would like to reinstall windows 7, as my computer was noticeably faster and smoother running it than running Vista. However, I'm afraid the screen will start acting up again. I mean, I only started having problems with the screen shortly after I installed windows 7. Coincidence?

My question is, was it Windows 7 that damaged this cable and back light controller, or was this all just a coincidence? Should I reinstall windows 7 on this laptop? Anyone else have experience running windows 7 on this model?

    Best post of this thread.

Long story short, there's no way Windows 7 could have caused that.

Agreed. Although software can cause damage to components, it's not something that typically happens without the user actually trying to do so - for example flashing a GPU to think it's something else and then using the new drivers or using software to overclock components. It's not what happened in this instance though; sometimes things do just break.

whoops must be a hardware fault, as w7 or 99% of software will not damage the hardware unless you ask it too.... ie OC or tweak the cpu, mem etc settings to much.

but have the laptop inverter looked at & the mobo too as it might have been a power fault or surge.

but seeing they have looked at it try w7 again.

better still wait for the real full pubic release not a pre copy.
