    According to dell site here:

    https://win7.dell.com/UpgradeDates.aspx

    quote:

so considering the actual shipping date is this thursday we should get ours on the 5th november.

I would be keen to know if anyone gets theirs sooner (please post on here if you do) and also mention where you are.

    Thanks

HI, I would imagine its going to vary based on a first come first serve basis. I mean they have to ship out everyone's upgrade from June 26 to like NOW so if ordered recently I wouldn't expect it for a while. You never know though I'm sure they don't want to have to send out all these upgrades for the next month. Might come sooner than you think.

    thats what I am hoping ;) !

btw - i would imagine that they are only going to send out disks to those people who have registered using the above links. I wouldnt just assume you are going to get some in the post.

Does anyone know what we will be actually receiving ?

I hope we're not forced to use some kind of dell wrapped install with all their drivers etc.

I deally would like to use a normal microsoft disk and just the license key that comes in the pack

caus i hate all the bloteware that dell install on all their laptops.

I was hoping it wipe the hard drive completely and then install it using the standard microsoft disk and then i can chooose what drivers etc to install.

Hey Mark. I don't think that is a good idea at all. I am willing to bet that Dell knows which drivers should be on the system... leave it at that. As far as bloat goes, pcdecrapifier will take care of it for you.

What you're hopping to get is a RETAIL upgrade disk and I don't think you're getting that. Probably just a DELL branded Win7 upgrade disk...

    @ TerryO'QuinnMedicine

So you still can't find a camera to take some pics of your "newly received" sxps 1645 w/ Core i7?

Having rebuilt many Dell laptops over the last 12 months, I think you might find that the disk will be a standard Dell build disk which will not contain any drivers at all, so you will might need to download the latest ethernet driver before you reformat, or Win 7 might find the ethernet driver on install, XP doesn't.

I haven't done any laptop win 7 installs only desktops and win 7 has installed the ethernet driver for those so you might be ok. You shouldn't need to be entering a license keys as that is part of the Dell install.

Maybe *BUT* you are assuming that Dell keep their drivers up to date! For some of the drivers in this laptop i would sooner bypass dell and go straight to the vendor that take the chipset - ATI and Intel are just two examples where the dell drivers are much older than the chipset manufactuerers ones.

Maybe - i guess there should be a windows 7 sticker on the disk with a windows key on it that I could use with the RTM normal disks that have been released. We'll see.

    LOL Midtown

Anyway, I was told by Dell that I would be getting drivers and the win7 software disk. Not sure if that is correct.
I also ordered my system a couple of weeks ago and then later called back to see if I could get win7 installed since my eta is 10.26. I was then told that they would automatically do it if it shipped after the 22nd.

If it is true about the upgrade being shipped out 2 weeks after launch, that seems unacceptable. They should offer a downloadable iso. I can't wait the two weeks, I am impatient.

I ordered an xps 1645 last week...... does that mean it will come preloaded with win 7 even though i purchased with vista since its eta is Nov 12?
Cuz that would be awesome!!!!! if not... are these upgrade disks they will be shipping out something that will install over an install of vista? cuz that would suck!!!!!

Hmm - just wondering what are the chances of me upgrading to 64 bit os rather than 32bit ?

My 1640 currently has Vista Home Premium 32 bit and I assume I will be receiving the 32 bit version but before I install it i wonder if I where to call microsoft and ask them to upgrade if I will be able to ?

64 Bit from what I've heard runs a little faster and can use more than 4GB of ram. I read somewhere a 64 bit OS can have a maximum of 128GB of ram. Wonder what a 128 bit OS's capability for ram will be lol. Won't find that one out for a long time :D

ok thanks, thats a shame because if you go out and buy a retail copy of windows 7 home premium upgrade you get both the 32 bit and 64 bit disks in the box.

EDIT: I wonder if we could use the windows 7 key provided by dell with a disk thats in the retail version of 64 bit windows !? :

nope, dude. even windows 7 supports 192 GB RAM (professional and higher versions). a 64 bit OS, in theory can support up to 2^64 bytes of ram which is 16 EB (exabyte). (its around 16 billion gigabytes)
    imho we won't need a 128 bit cpu/os for a while :)

No, if you bought an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home premium 32bit you could use the key, not sure about 64bit, but you wouldn't need to if you bought a separate Windows 7 64bit whether it is retail or OEM it will come with a S/N which you would use instead of the one Dell supply.

I don't know if Dell will supply a separate Windows 7 license sticker, if they don't you won't get a key as it is embedded in the Dell disk and you wouldn't need to enter it if you reinstall your 32bit OS.

Assuming we only get the same "bit" os as whats installed, ie I only receive a 32 bit upgrade disk from dell then I wonder if it would be possible to borrow the 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Disk from somebody (dont want their key!) and use the dell key with the borrowed disk.

Dont see any issues with that - its just very poor of dell for not providing the 64bit disk as well (assuming they dont). In the eyes of Microsoft i have done nothing wrong as its only the same as buying the full retail windows 7 that i linked to above.

Guess we'll have to see what turns up.

EDIT: It has been confirmed that it is the same key to install both the 32bit version and the 64bit version when you buy the retail OSM disks - but its a once only choice (see this post here) : http://www.avforums.com/forums/windows-7/1104307-just-got-windows-7-delivered-5.html#post10634992
Worth thinking about this because if we where to charge ahead and use the 32 bit dell provided disk (again assuming they only give us the 32 bit version) then once we have installed it and activated it then we're stuck with 32 bit !

i dont think thats the case you should be able to switch to 64 bit when you please all you need is the serial key which dell should provide since you "paid" for it

    where did you see that?

if you go to dells windows 7 FAQ ( https://win7.dell.com/FAQPage.aspx)

    and look at question 2:

How do I get my free Windows 7 upgrade?

At that time, customers will be required to enter their credit card information to pay tax, shipping and handling charges. The upgrade kit will ship after payment is received (ship times will be quoted at the time of order).

It therefore states we will have to pay tax and shipping...

Not trying to say you are wrong, because i hope you arent, but my source says you are....

So, can anyone CONFIRM the fact or not?

Well, with my laptop purchase back in August I qualified for a free W7 Home Premium upgrade. I just had to fill in the W7 Upgrade Eligibility form and it stipulated everything there including no S&H charge. I did not have to provide credit card info. This is for Dell.ca which I'd assume would the same for US? Sorry.

I went back to the Dell Windows 7 upgrade site, and it looks like you can now place your order for the Win7 upgrades (not just register for it). And I do actually mean place an order. You put all the upgrades you registered into a cart, go through the checkout process, and get an order number.

I'm in the US, and there was no charge for shipping, handling, tax, etc. It was completely free. There is now an order status page where I can look at my order. Right now it says my order is processing, but it looks like it will contain the estimated ship date, tracking info, etc.

I don't think that you could use the upgrade key then. The DVD which we will be receiving is an upgrade DVD, so it can't be installed on a blank HD, I believe it needs to be installed on a Vista computer already, so in all likelyhood I would expect the product key for the upgrade disk to not work for the fresh install disk :( Sadly.

I would say call dell and throw a fit maybe they will replace it if this is true considering if you had to reformat you would have to install Vista and then Windows 7.

Spent sometime last night looking into this...

Turns out what we will be getting looks like it might just be the same iso image (with no keys or stickers etc) thats "preactivated" image from dell.

    See this link:
    http://www.blogsolute.com/2009/09/windows-7-ultimate-rtm-dell-oem-x64-x86-pre-activated-leaks.html

I did try and find the download mentioned above but failed.

Bit annoying that dell couldnt just give us a download link of the ISO and we have to wait two weeks (plus a postal strike in the uk) to receive the disk.

Please feel free for anyone to post a note on here when they receive theirs and comment on what they actually receive.

    Thanks!

    Mark

EDIT: There is talk of there being a key printed on the sleve of the disk - I suspect that if there is a key on the sleve of the disk that its definalty not the key thats used in the preactivated image thats on the disk (wink wink ;) )

    http://win7.dell.com/

And i was now able to pay the £15 P+P for my order and it now says my order says "Processing" - theres no date listed under "Estimated Ship Date" yet....

    Just a shame it says "Windows 7 Home Premium® 32bit English" :(

I'm downloading the Win 7 professional version right now, got it for $29.95 online with college ID. Not sure whether to partition my existing harddrive and have both Vista and Win 7 or to just overwrite everything. Unfortunately, I ordered my XPS with Vista Home edition which does not allow an upgrade to Win PRO without a clean install. I have a free Win 7 home coming, but I need the extra functionailty of Win 7 Pro. Have to reinstall all my programs, that's the pain in the butt. Might leave Vista for now and run them both, then take my time reinstalling leaving Vista operational.
