    Hi,
Is the version of Media Center 2005 that you can purchase when buying the computer
(Inspiron 9300) the same as the one from Microsoft? If you already have Windows Media Center 2005,
do you still need to buy this one for the Inspiron 9300 or will that one work with this?

    Thanks...

Probably its the same one... Dell wouldn't have made their own version of it.

it's windows xp pro with a final installation at the end of the install ( about 20 minutes ! ) that puts in the media center option.

if it's XP Pro, why then is it a $39 option and Pro is $79... and they are mutually exclusive - the way Dell is sellin' it?

    don't think it's XP Pro...

Really would like Media Center AND XP Pro... (Dell media experience sux - it's a bastardized version of Media Center...) but would never own a home version of Windows... never have understood why ppl buy 'em...

pretty sure media center ed. is more expensive than xp pro.

I think what you did was you clicked on XP pro as an add-inoption, and thena fter you updated your cart, you looked at the OS list and noticed that Media Center Ed. has 39$ next to it, this means that it is 39$ more expensive than xp pro.

this is what happened when i bought my laptop

I've heard different ppl saying differently on MCE thou -- some say that it's based on XP Pro, while some say that it's based on XP Home.

After playing w/ it for a while -- it DOES seem that Domain features were missing from MCE, which means that MCE is based on XP Home.

The pricing structure sorta affirms this as well -- why would companies sell MCE *cheaper* than XP Pro, if XP Pro was merely a subset of MCE? The features that made XP Pro different from XP Home -- mainly the domain management and some additional networking features -- were not present in MCE.

    cheers,

    yass

Turns out that media center edition is based on xp pro. It seems to be a cheap way to get pro I have the media center and from what little looking I have done it does appear to be pro. I also checked on the MSDN distribution and it appears to be pro there too. It is definately not home.

Yes you can do domains on XP MCE. In fact, when you go through the installation, the blue screen reads: xp professional
The only thing missing is the group administration I believe.
But you can network with it and use it just like xp pro - believe me i used it on my home network - run Samba domain with Linux....
