I need to format my Dell Inspiron E1405 and re-install Windows XP due to presence of viruses... however, I need to re-install from the i368 folder, which will not allow me to format the computer before I begin re-installation. Any suggestions/comments?

Don't think you have a way around this one. I'm assuming the i386 folder is the one thats on your main drive right?? If thats the case you can't wipe the drive because you need that folder to re-install. I have no idea if there is a way to put the i386 folder contents on a external drive etc.. and install from that.
If you don't mind me asking why can't you install from cd/dvd ?
