Hey I've been having this error message when playing more recent games like Team Fortress 2 and Portal and I think its an error with my video card and the Vista OS. The screen goes black and then this error message comes up:
    http://www.itwriting.com/images/display_error.gif

Anyone know how to fix? I'm on a laptop so the drivers are differnt for me. Heres my setup:
    Dell Inspiron 1520
    2 processors running - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz
2.19 GHz Performance Rated at 5.43 GHz
    2.0 GB RAM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition (Build 6000)
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (GeForce 8600M GT)
Your driver version number is: 7.15.11.5655

I know a lot of other people have this issue and I want it fixed because it occurs every 15 minutes or so and stops my computer for about a minute, but I have not seen a good answer or fix from google browsing. I tried reinstalling my graphics drivers but whenever I try to use the drivers from the nvidia site, it tells me it doesn't apply to my computer. Also when I go to mobile downloads from their website, they don't have the 8600M GT card as an option to download drivers for...

EDIT: Fixed link but the error is Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, but has succesfully recovered. Not igfx

Your link is incomplete/broken. Use the globe w/chain button to insert the link.

Try Lv2go drivers. Search the forum for recommend drivers from Lv2go.

Make sure that you the modded .INF to install it.

You could try these if you dont already have them: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R166473&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1520&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=13668&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=224877

These are the newest one "officialy" supported by dell.

I belive that the reson why nvidia does not have newer drivers on there page is because dell has not tested them to work with there computers.

As an alternitive you could go to www.laptopvideo2go.com and follow the instructions to install newer nvidia drivers using a modiffied .inf file.

Ok I installed the 169.09 driver for my card, and I'll test and see if I still have game crashes. Is it possible that there is a Vista update that I need for the Nvidia driver?

The ones directly from nVIDIA will not work on laptops - you need either the Dell ones or the laptopvideo2go.com ones in order for them to install. It's not a Vista issue.

I had the same problem, I forget which driver it was, though. 169.09 should fix it; if not, see if there's a version before the 156.55 you had at the beginning of this post that you can roll back to.

I had these problems with a M1330. Installed the latest drivers from Dell, installed them from laptopvideo2go.com, re-installed Vista, considered going to XP...

In the end, it turned out to be the motherboard. Got it replaced. Now everything is ok. If you search these forums you will see that the A01 revision motherboard for the M1330 was faulty for a lot of people. Perhaps there is a similar problem for the 1520?

Try the latest drivers first though. If that doesn't work, then it might be hardware.

    Are there any fixes for this problem if I'm running;

    Sony VAIO
    Vista 32 bit
Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chip Family for a display adapter

Been looking all over the place for a fix and this is closest I have come, however I do not have a nVidia card, so the fix doesn't work for me.

I play WoW and every 5 minutes or so the scren goes black and I get a notification saying "Display Driver has stopped responding, but has successfully recovered."

I've been having this problem with the half-life 2 engine including portal and team fortress 2. Playing game, goes black or freezes on screen, whatever sound keeps repeating itself for about 3 minutes, then shows everything really quickly that just happened and the game is normal. Always gives display driver nvlddmkm or nvlddmkm.sys has stopped working. Upgrade bios, chipset, nvidia card every update, and everything else from support.dell.com. Seems to happen on a lot, especially the 1520 which I have. I've seen other people with the same computer have the same problem. Really it isn't the motherboard it's just a driver error maybe due to the fact I have vista. I've done a complete restore of my system and still doesn't work.
    Graphics card: 8600m gt.
maybe it has a problem with the cpu since all 1520s have the same. Mine is
intel core duo 1.80 ghz. I've been searching everywhere in about every forum and still nothing. I don't have any other problems though and i tried sending an email to the makers of half-life 2. If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears.

Regarding the message from Windows about the display driver having stopped working and then recovered - this can also be caused by a hardware error. I sometimes saw this error as my graphics card failed on the M1330 - fixed by a motherboard (plus graphics) replacement.

So I suppose it can also be heat sensitive - which might explain why it appears after a period playing and recover (later as it cools?).

Any word on a fix for this? I have a Toshiba with the same 945GM chip. Everything was working fine up until a few weeks ago when Windows update downloaded a driver update, but it won't let me roll back the driver for some reason.
The only game I play on it is NHL 08, which doesn't need much graphically, and has been working fine for several months before.
