Is anyone with Windows XP able to overclock their 8600m GT? I can't get the clocks settings to stay, but in Vista, they work perfectly.

If you can, please list the nVidia driver you're using.

Can you tell me if you're using the nvidia drivers from laptopvideo site or the ones that came with the system? Because it won't let me overclock mine for some reason, whenever I go over, it just reverts back to stock settings.

I'm using 101.17 from the laptop nvidia driver site, whatever. And yea, same for me. Whenever I overclock in XP, it just reverts.

Well actually mine is IN Vista so I can't even overclock at all, I can underclock though. Do you know what might be causing this? I just check the power options and everything so I don't know what im doing wrong. Did you do a clean Vista install cause I'm thinking some Dell bloatware is preventing me from doing it.

No, I just removed all the unnecessary software that dell had preloaded in my Vista install. Hm, strange, no?

Could be something to do with the bios, that's all I can think. I am still waiting on my laptop so I can't confirm anything yet.

This thread isn't about how to overclock, it's about if anyone is able to in XP on the 1520 with the 8600m GT.

In another thread I read someone OC'd his 8600 GT with forceware 158.5 off laptop2go, and got the clocks to stick. He was using Vista though.

He also tried OCing using 163.11 and it wouldn't let him. Go figure :p

I OC on this 9300 quite well and have been for 2yrs. You have to have the Reghack before you can do it...nVidia does not enable it in their XP drivers. The 5600GT is just another in a long and never ending line of video cards....nothing special about OCing it in any OS...once you have it enabled.

So I'm 100% sure you can OC a 5600 on an XP machine. Who cares? Nothing special about OCing. All 4 machines in this house are OC'd, some quite abit. (I once held the 3rd highest 3Dmark score on the 3Dmark site back in '02...so I know something about the subject) :D

Ninja, we are talking about the 8600, not the 5600...lol. I am guessing you just mistyped or misread. Pretty cool about the 3dMark thing though...

there is a possibility Dell did something to the bios of the mobo or vid card that won't let you OC it easily.

Nah....I dont believe it. And yes, I forget the darn number...I mean 8600...even have it wrong in my Sig...lol

On my I9300...everytime I update the Vid drivers....I have to redo the Hack. It downloadable from most any Driver site like Guru3D. I use specially modded Laptop drivers from Tweaks R Us....great stuff. Still need to do the hack though after you first install it. I keep them close so I can always find it.

I was talking to a tech Dell Rep. He actually told me to OC the card to stock performance. Does this void warranty in anyways? and also, would it still be stable ? extra noise? heat?

xspeed9190 it will vary from card to card if you want "MAX" performance, but in general, OC'ing to the stock speeds (listed on nV site?) shouldn't hurt it. I OC'd my 8400M GS about 90MHz over "factory" speed core and about 60MHz over factory memory speed and it worked flawlessly, no heat problems or artifacting, etc.

I was using the 158.01 Forcewares, suggested by another user on the HP/Compaq boards. They worked great for me, maybe you guys should try them--they are for XP.

Lemme know how it goes, I would love to OC my 8600M GT once I get it. :)

I don't want this thread to be about how far you can overclock, I want to know if anyone's been able to overclock (On their Inspiron 1520) in Windows XP. I can't seem to find a way to.

And yes, I do know what I'm doing. Rivatuner doesn't stick, coolbits is ineffective, nTune.. nope! If someone can overclock their 8600m GT in XP on their Inspiron 1520, please list their driver.

WINDOWS XP ONLY. INSPIRON 1520 ONLY.

I heard that the drivers were holding back the 8600M GT. I haven't received my yet so I can't confirm that. But try the 158.01's. I was answering 1990's question about "stable" speeds by suggesting that he doesn't need to worry about the cards losing stability as long as he is being REASONABLE. Plus, if you use RivaTuner, it will lock out any speeds that it deems too high to achieve.

Rivatuner won't lock you out. It'll only list too high (or low) speeds in a warning 'zone'. My post wasn't in response to yours, btw.

Has anyone tried Powerstrip? As a stand alone app it may be able to force the higher clocks vs nvid produced products. I don't have my laptop yet, or I would try.

Yeah, that's why I suggested the 158.01 driver. It doesn't hurt to try it, ESPECIALLY when there are no other viable alternatives.

The newest drivers from laptopvideo2go 163 doesn't let me overclock in vista.

    The older one 158, does.

So he's telling you to try that driver and see if it'll work in XP... can't hurt(at least I hope not)

^ lol yeah exactly. I suggested it because it worked for me for my 8400M GS (uh oh I said a forbidden word and broke your rule!). It also supports the 8600M GT.
