I was thinking about getting a copy of the 64 bit version of xp. I have the regular 32-bit on my laptop right now. As i was looking on the drivers cd that came with my laptop it shows limited amount of drivers compared to what is under the 32-bit tab. Do i just use the 32-bit drivers for whatever isnt available on the 64-bit drivers list?
Also has anyone used the 64-bit version of XP yet on a vostro/Inspiron 1500/1520? and your thoughts?

i don't have a vostro, but i really don't think that the 32-bit drivers on your driver CD will work with win xp 64-bit ed. probably not a good idea to try. i would leave the 32-bit OS alone.
-
You only have 1gb of ram. 64bit is only useful for 4+gb. I would upgrade your ram to at least 2gb if you are going to do anything to it. Oh, and for the driver thing, you need 64bit drivers.
-
I was planning on upgrading the RAM. And as far as the drivers CD it has drivers for all OS's (Vista 32 and 64 bit, and XP 32 and 64 Bit). The only thing is there are just a few 64 bit drivers compared to the 32 bit drivers available.
My main question was that after i install the available 64-bit drivers. What do i do about the other drivers i need that arent available? If you look on the driver cd for the vostro you will see what i am talking about. -

Forget it, I just installed windowx xp 64bit on my vostro 1500. The OS runs pretty fast and I only have 1GB ram, but it's impossible to find drivers for the video card and the ethernet card
If someone has found drivers at least for the ethernet card please let us know.
What's the point of having 64bit CPU when you can't run a 64bit OS. -
ludakot,
I am surprised that you cannot find a video driver that will work. Do you have one of the nvidia cards (I think some of the 1500's had Intels)? In my experience, nvidia is very good about releasing 64 bit drivers. Did you find a wireless driver? How about a webcam? Thanks for the feedback and being a bit daring.
Update: On my vostro 1500, I have a broadcom 440X ethernet controller. After some searching, the driver for this is located at http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/4401.php I seems like the driver works pretty well from what others say. The video is a little disappointing because nvidia isn't support the laptop driver cards, but you can go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and find the 64 bit drivers that should work. I think they actually ripped them from Lenovo.
Let's see if we can't get all the driver's needed to get an x64 install -
Sorry about the long post, but I saw another forum on this website ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=187229)

01/26/2008 03:19:00PM David Hansen: "This is great so far, thank you...Do you know when Dell will have their x64 drivers page up again?"
01/26/2008 03:20:03PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "Well the thing is that there are some that are for 64 bit, some that all for 64 and 32 bit, so what they did was mix them under the windows XP section."
01/26/2008 03:22:05PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "This is for modem too"
01/26/2008 03:22:08PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510) sends page: "http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R148605&SystemID=VOS_N_1500&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13468&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=20&fileid=197457"
01/26/2008 03:22:12PM David Hansen: "hmmm...that seems to be a bit confusing"
01/26/2008 03:22:50PM David Hansen: "Do I just need to search through the windows xp section to find the rest?"
01/26/2008 03:23:03PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "Yes"
01/26/2008 03:23:28PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "Thought some of your drives do not have their drivers listed their like your optical drive."

01/26/2008 03:24:15PM David Hansen: "I can probably do that on my own...any suggestions for the ones that don't have drivers besides the manufacturer?"
01/26/2008 03:26:49PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "I do not think you will have any problems with the any other driver."

01/26/2008 03:30:18PM Agent (SMB_Jose_176510): "just click on start, run and type msinfo32 in the dialog box and press OK, click on the + next to the Components section, look for the drive for which you need its name."
01/26/2008 03:30:58PM David Hansen: "Great. Thanks for all your help"
So most of the drivers are mixed in so you want to look for "multi OS" to find drivers that will work. I will try to install windows xp x64 soon. I'll keep you updated -
