Unfortunately, you don't get a CD because Dell stop sending the CDs a few months ago (all because of money). They have a new utility that will allow you to burn one copy of XP/XP Pro, and you can use it to do a clean install. I'm not sure of the exact name, but I think its called Dell Recovery CD and its under start menu-->programs-->one of the dell folders. If you do this, burn your drivers on to a cd (located on C drive under Dell folder).

Another option is to call Dell and request the CDs (3 in total: XP, drivers, and extra stuff). The problem with that is that Dell won't just send them to you because you want them. They have to see a reason for you to need them. If you plan on upgrading your HDD, windows doesn't load, you don't have the recovery program, etc...then they'll send you a set of CDs.

    Hope this helps,

    ~SG~

hmmm, they didn't give me a problem and i just asked for them with nothing more persuasive than a 'I paid for them and deserve to have them,' and it worked...but to be on the safe side you should probably say you want to upgrade your hard drive or somethign like SouthernGirl suggests.

It is normal, Dell doesn't send them out as standard.

They are very easy to get though (i just did yesterday as a matter of fact) you can either email them at their service & support address (see their webpage) or give them a call. They don't give you any hassle, they just send it to you.

lucky you [ :D]. There has been some debate on whether you can just call them up and they'll send them to you, or something has to be wrong. Maybe it just depends on what tech you get [?] ...seems like I get different answers when I call.

Don't get me wrong...i'm not trying to be discouraging or saying its impossible to get them. If you call and just request them, they might ask for a reason. Sometimes, they'll grant your request, and sometimes they don't. If they don't, try again.

They are rightfully yours and you just have to ask. If they charge you ,call back and it will be removed.

Don't make up a problem .Express if necessary that you would need them if your HD fails or you upgrade it.

I put in two e-mails, one with customer care and the other with technical support because Iwasn't sure which one was right. The customer care gave me 50$ off a purchase of 50.01 or more but said I would have to call to possibly buy the cd's (i never said I was disatisfied in any way but I still got the concession coupon first thing). On the other side, the technical support said the service had been set up and the cd's would be sent within 3-4 business days. I had mentioned to both I needed them to upgrade my hard drive. Weird the inconsistancies. [?]

Congrats on the coupon...its always nice to get those.

I don't understand the differences either. You can talk to one tech and get one story, then talk to another and get another story. I'm glad you got your CDs without any hassel.

To let you know and I'll have to find it again to post it. There is a disclaimer type notice on Dells site stating what you will receive with each computer and the OS,Drivers and Utilities Disks are included. This would be good to email Dell if someone has a problem since It's posted on their Website. Try looking for it. I've found many times but don't remember how. I think I have an idea and remember. I'll try to find it. Throw that in their face and It'll have to shut them up. [ :p][ :p][ :p]

The inconsistance is not weird. First of all it's Dell and a very large company that has different call centers ,languages and Dell is known for being inconsistant.

We all know this about Dell. There are tons of companies that are the same way. Every person is different so you're never going to have the same reaction.

I could call my local phone copany w/a question and get 5 different answers.

I agree, Dell Chat is better than their phone service. Generally, you'll receive parts from their tech support within 2 days of requesting them. They are quick about things [ :D] except I don't like the fact that I have to sign for everything that comes from them (I don't have neighbors so it goes back to the warehouse if I'm not here.)

I contacted Dell through dell.com/chat. Told them I needed the CDs to upgrade my hard drive, and they said no problem.

But get this...I called them at 4pm Thursday. I got the CDs at noon today. 20 hours from chat to delivery of CDs - that's friggin amazing. This is my first Dell, and I love the computer and the company. I encourage everyone to use Dell chat - it has been very effective for me to get issues resolved quickly.

I just got on Dell Chat and asked for the CD's, and he said he would ship them out, with no questions asked.

Tim: I would like the Disks for the Inspiron 6000
Greg: Alright, just let me confirm your shipping address, and we will ship them out to you.

I generally use e-mail but chat sounds better. Next time I'll try chat. By the way does anyone know what the premier warranty support includes and if it is worth getting?

Basically, the only differences between premium and the others are:
1.) it is 4 year coverage
2.) includes accidental coverage for 4 years
3.) has online training courses (I'm not sure how good they are)
It covers the same amount of damages as the others. Here is a link that compares it to the plus warranty http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/promo.aspx/services/service_bundles?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Personally, I don't think its worth it. Technology becomes outdated so quickly that if you got a 2 year warranty and accidental coverage (if you are clumbsy like me [ :D] ), then you should be set for the lifetime of your notebook. If anything was to happen after 2 years, you would probably want a new laptop anyways.

[edit] one warning about chat, sometimes you might have to wait for 5+ minutes, but it will tell you how long your wait time is when you submit a request. Usually that only happens in peak hours though.
