Well this may seem like a stupid question but I couldn't find the answer on Dells website. My Question is do Dell Computers come with Windows pre-loaded onto the hard drive with restore disks or does it come with an actual copy of Windows. I honestly wish more computers came with actual copies rather than restore disks. You're paying for it.

    -Thanks Mike

hey Mike, not a stupid question at all, I have the Inspiron 700m and the Windows XP Home disk is indeed a restore disk (Reinstallation CD is the title they give it) so it is not the same as going to the store and buying a copy of Windows XP Home.

Since when is it only a restore disk?

I had a Dell WinXp home Reinstall disk

popped it in my Compaq laptop and reinstalled windowsXP home using the CD key on the bottom of the laptop

so the disk works fine as a regular windows DISK ...

cuz all the dell software comes on seperate CD called the "Resource CD"

When I ordered my 8600 I worried about the same thing, but I ended up getting an actual WinXP Professional cd with my laptop. Did a complete reformat (killed all the hidden partitions) and everything reinstalled fine. My other PCs recognize it as a standard winxp cd as well. Perhaps it varies from system to system?

Me too has a fully functional WinXP CD, which is restricted to only install on Dell PC's. Own a Latitude.
