So I need some help, and unfortunately, I don't have too many details on the problem. Since about 2 days ago, whenever I've tried to boot up my E1705, Windows hasn't completely loaded, and after the main Windows Loading Screen (the one with the progress bar and the windows logo) rather than show me user screen, it remains black.

After forcing the system off and turning it back on, I'm prompted that Windows (obviously) hasn't loaded properly and that I need to choose what mode I want to boot it in. After selecting "start windows normally" it will load again, and this second time, it works.

Generally, I keep my computer on all day, and turn it off at night before going to bed, so this has only happened to me 3 or 4 times thus far, but I'm pretty sure that it's something that will be constant, as it has happened consistently each time I try to start my computer.

Also, I have run several virus scans, spybot, adaware, and the like and nothing has shown up in any of them. So dunno that it's a virus causing this.

In my recollection there is nothing I have done to the computer that should be causing this, but to be of help, the major things I've changed are:

GPU Driver: ver. 84.29 Laptop Video2go - have had these for over a month though and didn't have the problem til now.

Xb360 Controller Driver: yeah, doubtful that this is the problem, but I updated this driver a few weeks ago.

GPU Overclock: Could having the gpu overclocked (for the last 2 months) have started this problem?

Installed Oblivion, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Heroes, 10gb worth of Steam Games.

Defragged Harddrive once a week/after major installs (excessive?)

Can't think of anything else offhand. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm worried that this problem might get worse and become less of an annoyance and more of a major issue. Thanks.

hmm, well lets start out with the basics.

Did you install any software or remove anything the last time it was working right?

I can't gurantee that this will fix your problem, but you can try to repair XP. To do this, you'll need to insert your XP disc, and follow the format process to step #6. Instead of pressing "Esc", you'll press "R". This will take about an hour, but it doesn't erase XP or anything like that. It repairs XP back to its default status, so you'll have to run XP Update and do all of the optimizing again.

Southern girl is right, it definitely sounds like a software problem, try repairing windows, it should solve it. The install everything new on a week at a time (graphics driver one week, somthing else the next), so that you can see what might be casuing the problem. Also i'd leave your graphics card at default clock. It's not good to oc graphics card in laptops, they just dont have the cooling required - keep it stock.

Are your laptop temperatures ok? (GPU, CPU)

I haven't installed or run anything new in the last week or so, at least not in my recollection. And if no one else can offer any other suggestions, I'll be doing that repair.

Only overclocking the GPU when I'm playing Oblivion and FEAR to give me some extra frames when things get hectic. And not having temperature issues, really. I'm more inclined to think the drivers would be the issue since my gpu has been overclocked for awhile, and the drivers aren't the stock.

Lappy's running nice and cool. CPU is at 31C, GPU at 59C. According the I8Kfangui, cpu peaked at 45C and gpu peaked at 74C when playing Oblivion. Neither of which I'd say are "hot" for what I was doing.
