    Hello,

I recived my 1720 friday and been fiddling arround with it this weekend. After installing winxp and searching for drivers the entire weekend I finally managed to have an allmost perfect device manager with no yellow exclamaion marks except for one PCI device for which I have no clues as of what it is or does. While installing drivers at some point the Laptop Webcam device disapered, can't remember the "PCI device" and the "Laptop Webcam" device where both in the list, but i don't think it can change it's name. The driver for the webcam didn't work, but now i can't find the webcam in the device manager list to try new drivers on it. ATM it says i have no webcam installed.

Also I remember in vista that for the sigmatel audio control panel there were more options than the 2 buttons i ended in xp. This is a secondary issue, I am satisfied that finally I got it working but if any1 has any knowledge about a more advanced driver or a working hack for that control panlel please let me know.

I find it unacceptable that the dell support site dosen't have all the xp 32-bit drivers and that you have to trial and arror drivers from other dell notebooks to find the ones working for your 1720.

If anyone has had any experience with installing windows XP on an 1720/1721 please share your experience maybe i'll find some answers there.

    Thanks,
    Alex :eek2:

while we're on it, can I ask you what do ya need to control Wi-Fi/ Ethernet on 1720 in XP. My Device manager shows a Network Controller with an exclamation
And yeah that PCI Device is probably the Phone Modem ? I have the same issue on that ...
Another thing I noticed why do we have 2 processors listed in device manager ?

we have 2 processors, cause its dual core, and XP recognizes it as 2 processors. the WIFI you can get the driver from intel, and windows has a built in program. the pci device could be the modem, but who uses them anyways?

Because you have a Core 2 Duo processor.

When you travel with your laptop, you'd be surprised how many times you don't have any wi-fi or LAN connections and you have to rely on a dial-up connection.

Not much help to offer here, but I'm glad to see a thread about installing XP on a 1721. My 1721 should be on it's way soon, and I'll be doing the same thing. I'm even more glad now I didn't get the webcam. :D

I think it could be the card reader, has anyone found drivers for WINXP regarding the card reader or webcam?
