I don't know if i should go for the Intel 3945 or the Dell 1390? Is there a distinct performance difference between the two?

Interesting question, and I have asked this question here before. I understand that the difference is the connectivity (band) options (b/g vs a/b/g), and not much to do with performance assuming they're used in the same band.
I'm sure the experts will chime in soon, or anyone with real-world experience. -
You are asking in terms of PERFORMANCE, so I'll leave it to that. The Intel one has added support for 802.11a in addition to 802.11b and 802.11g as the Dell one does. Furthermore, some say the Intel one has SLIGHTLY increased performance due to it being more standard compliant, etc.

I ordered the Intel chip on my 1520. When you get the intel chip you also get the Centrino mobile technology which gets more battery life out of your notebook. Thats the biggest reason I got the Intel chip.
Wireless card question for the 1520
