    Hi all,

Bought a shiny new 640m 6 months ago and have been using always-on wireless in my home with it for the past 3 months. Based on some advice from this forum, I did a little tweaking i.e. removed the occasional unnecessary process (using processlibrary.com advice as well). To be honest, I can't remember what I removed but everything seems to be working fine so far.

Except for wireless. I've got the IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 3945 card and wireless does work properly - it just cuts out really really frequently. Yes, it could be my wireless router but I'm also wondering if it's this machine.

Thing is - when I lose the wireless signal, 2 things could happen:
    a) It finds itself again and everything is back to normal OR
    b) It doesn't find itself again and nothing will get it back again apart from rebooting (logging out/back in doesn't do it, disabling the card and enabling it again doesn't work, refreshing to find the wireless profile again ain't good enough either)

Is it just me or is it the machine?

    Jim,

I'm using Intel Proset. How do I switch to the Windows card? I only seem to have an Intel Wireless network card - at least according to Device Manager->Network Adapters. The only other network card I can see is a Broadcom one - but that's wired as far as I know.

Where should I be seeing the Windows card and how can I enable it?

    Thanks,

proset is the program it uses for access in the proset control there is a checkbox that says let windows manage wireless connections check this the proset program can be found on the start menu programs or by clicking on the proset icon by the clock if it is there

    Thanks Jim.

Followed your instructions and now Windows is managing the connection. Hopefully this will hold up better.

    Cheers.

    Hi again Jim,

All good on the wireless front.

Well, mostly. I've noticed a little snag. When I log in for the first time in the morning, it doesn't connect automatically to my preferred (home) network - I have configured it to connect to this network as standard. It often doesn't even find the network, much less connect to it - it finds a few others in the area though (all secure, so pointless). This problem also occurs when I, for example, put the PC on standby/hibernate and then return to my already open XP profile.

A quick logging out of my XP profile and logging back in solves the problem - it finds the network then immediately.

Any idea how to get around this?

    Thanks in advance.
