I've tried to find some info on this, but I haven't had any luck yet, so I hope someone is kind enough to help me sort this one out.
Well Im going to get a Dell D820 and I'm wondering about the wireless card. Is there any reason to pay more to get the Intel one over the one dell makes? If so I'd like someone to clarify why (I'm very well aware of the a/b/g standards![]()
Thx in advance![]()

Dell 1390 supports b/g.
Dell 1490 supports a/b/g.
Both of them use Broadcom chip.
From my own experience, Broadcom driver and utility are much better than Intel one. This factor alone would drive me to the Broadcom side. -
I personally find the Intel to connect/login faster. The interface for software is also easier to setup and connect on the fly. I personally prefer my Intel over my old Broadcom.

The Intel card is great. I have the 2200BG and i regularly connect to 3 different routers; a trendnet, SMC, and Netgear. no drops, great signal and i find the proset interface much better than the MS solution (although the dell has a different utility i believe).
if you're having speed issues, i would say it's probably not the card and more probably your setup. what kind of steps have you taken to isolate the problem? -

I don't know if I'd say the 2200 is great, drumfu. It seems to be more of a hit or miss prospect if anything. My girlfriends' Latitude D620's 2200 card seemed to work flawlessly right out of the box, while it was a near-constant battle with my XPS M140's 2200 card just to get it to work semi-decently.
We do, after all, have a 51 page thread (!) in the Networking and Wireless forum just about problems with the 2200...... -
i know i know
i just hate these blanket statements; "___________ is junk!"
it's the lawyer in me that can't let those statements go by without comment -

Heh, fair enough. I hope I didn't sound too "blankety" myself.

I can only talk about the 3945 card. The steps I've taken are numerous (by the way, don't worry I know what I'm doing), I could copy and paste my chats with Dell support if you want. I'm still narrowing down to the wireless, it can be the antenna too. My other computers on the same network work great, nice bandwith. I'm going thru two Intel wireless cards now (3945) and they are sending me a Dell 1390. -
are your other computers notebooks? if so, have you tried a swap of the wireless cards?
if you have gone through two cards already, it makes me think the problem isn't with the cards at all. -
