This issue has been a nightmare. My computer will only hibernate about a third of the time. The rest of the time when I click hibernate: the computer brings up "Preparing to Hibernate" then the screen will flicker a couple of time while black. Then, it goes back to the normal desktop and the hibernate option is grayed out and under Power Options the Hibernate tab is gone.
So far, I have done PC Restore, flashed the BIOS, reinstalled the video card driver, reinstalled chipset driver, obviously scanned for viruses and spyware. Nothing has helped. Also, I cannot isolate it to when a certain program or process is running. Anyone have the same problem or have a solution?
Running: Inspiron e1705, 2 ghz, 80 gb 7200 rpm, 2 gb ram 553 mhz, wuxga w truelife, 256 MB Nvidia GeForce GO 7900 GS

It is because you have 2 gb ram. You need Microsoft patch:
http://translocator.ws/2005/11/06/hibernation-insufficient-system-resources
If it doesn't work, or you can't find it, I can send you the file, just send me a PM.
I hope it will help you, because it helped to many people already.
Cheers,

Wow, thank you. I spent over 15 hours on the phone with Dell trying to fix this before posting and we would still be going in circles. The patch fixed it.
