My girlfriend has had a dell laptop for just over a year and the last week it has decided on to turn on. I can hear the fan starting for a few seconds and then nothing. This is the same for when the mains cable is connected. We've tried a different mains cable but still not switching on.

    Anyone with any other ideas?

You could try to power on the laptop with just the adapter and no battery plugged in. Another thing you can do is a power drain, and see if it helps your case. Basically what you do is, remove the battery and adaptor, and hold down the power button for about 20-30 seconds. Then plug it all back in and see if it boots up. **make sure your laptop is completely off before doing so**

That's actually what happened with my XPS M1530. Call up Dell, they'll run some diagnostics. In my case, my motherboard was shot and they told me I needed a new one (which I turned down).

If it will not power up with the battery removed try powering on after re-seating the memory chips, then try one memory chip at a time in each memory slot.

Failing that try removing the hard Drive and CD ROM, and wireless card
