"Work In Progress" What does this mean & how long will it take?
Dell says:
Work In Progress
- If you personalized your computer, it's being prepared for production.
- If you ordered an accessory, software or ink, your order is being prepared for packing.
Does this mean they are making it? Or does it mean its getting all the stuff (e.g hard drive) to make it?

yes, i ordered my dell studio xps on the 23rd of December 09 however i've just checked it today and its still on "work in progress" pls help us, we need your knowledge!!!
-
From what I've read it may take approx 3 weeks, since what you have ordered is assembled somewhere in the word and it may be delayed again. It depends ...
-
what do you know, the very next day its off the "work in progress" and onto "manufacturing build complete". dell must be spying on me -.- I'm sorry!!!
-
I think it depends on what kind of dell you ordered. My m15x went from work in progress to in production in a couple of hours and then took a few days(including weekend) to go to shipped. It was during the shipped stage that I had problems (displayed shipped early monday morning but didn't actually get picked up by ups until this evening)
-
I understand that many have or are still waiting for their orders from Dell and I really wish I had done more research prior to placing my order, but I really wanted a laptop and Dell actually offered me credit. Anyhow after seeing how bad production times have been how long is realistic to wait before worring that my laptop order isn't going to arrive? I ask because My order shows two different status depending on the page I am on and has been like this for 5 days.
My Order Status page shows N/A for the EDD and Work in Progress for the Status
Order Details page shows 1/21/2010 for the EDD and In Progress for the Status
TIA for any words of advice.
Fubie -
Yeah I wish I had done more research about problems too but hopefully the laptop will be worth it.
I don't really know what to say but I think it is good that both say work in progress. The edd, in my opinion is such a load of rubbish. Most either come a week or more before or way after first estimate but thats just my opinion.
I am afraid with dell it is very hard to know what is going on with your order(not what you want to hear I am sure) and dell customer service is not like to be of any help.
I would just continue to check it regularily but take some comfort that it does say its in progress. Sorry I can't help anymore and I hope it moves to shipped soon -
Thanks for the update Amy189!
After posting here I went to the Dell website and tried configuring a new laptop like the one I ordered and it appears my selection of 6GB of DDR2 800 might be causing a delay (6 days appearently...) but as most have discovered with Dell it could be any reason or none at all causing the delay. -
Yeah you never quite know with dell. Hopefully you got your order in before their stock became low
But I'd give them a few more days of in production before you get in contact with them because their customer service is likely to just frustrate you more. Hopefully you won't need to contact them anyway because it will be completed soon -
Fubie - hope you've had some progress with your order. I also hope you get ups as your shipper... my dell left the netherlands at 5pm on the 6th and will be delivered tomorrow (down from an estimated date of the 12th). Now if only all companies (**cough cough** dell **cough cough**) could be this effective
-
Amy awesome. Now hopefully it gets to you fast and intact. Let us know!
As for me there has been no change, but I'm not to or past my original EDD. Any how keep us posted. -
unfortunately my delivery date got changed back to monday because ups forgot they don't do deliveries on a saturday in the uk. I too hope it gets here intact and working!!! lol
Hope they change yours to shipped on monday -
Luck to us both then! Here's to Monday.
-
Liam, I ordered exactly the same as you did on 02-Jan and my order is still in "Work In Progress" with an estimated delivery date of 22-Jan. Have you had any update? I wonder if a particular part of the system we have ordered is in short supply (although it's not as if we've ordered anyting particular exotic!).
I'm pretty annoyed really, I wouldn't have ordered a laptop from Dell if I knew it was going to take this long! -
Yeh!! I got my laptop on Saturday (9th Jan)
Its awesome. I actually feel sorry for you, because I was actually refreshing it like every 5 mins :L
Its well worth the wait <33 -
Glad to know you got your laptop liam! Even better that it is all you wanted! I hope Amy189's laptop arrives today as well.
As for me I can only guess I'm waiting on the memory combination that Dell uses to make 6GB...
Dan I feel you pain. Depending on which page I look at I show 3 different status...Gotta love Dell. -
LMFAO. I decided to give the Dell automated phone line a call and see what it had to say about my order. Wouldn't you know it says my order is currently being processed and was delivered 1/6/2010???? Isn't this swell since I haven't seen any laptop laying around my front porch?
-
Liam, first of all congrats! Secondly, when did you order your laptop and how long did it take to go from Work in Progress to being delivered?
Maybe there is hope for mine yet..... (fingers crossed!) -
I hope all is going well for the rest of you!!! I have hope that something is happening with my order as 3 of the 4 status reports are now showing "In Production"
We'll see. -
I get so frustrated that Dell never answer the emails you send via the support pages asking for further information!?!?$%&?!%?!
They claim to aim to answer all queries within 24 hours....erm, I've been waiting way longer than that.
And i thought dell used to pride themselves on their production and delivery process. I can't begin to describe my frustration and dissapointment. -
It's great to her liam has his lappy. Anyone know if Amy189 is in possesion of the UPS delayed laptop yet?
Sorry to hear more frustration from you Dan. Anything new about what is happening with you?
I have hopes that my 1555 will arrive on 1/21, but I'm not holding my breath. The Studio 15 order page shows that 6GB of RAM is causing (yet again) a 6 day delay in orders. I still have no idea if my system is actually being produced. As for e-mailing questions to Dell, if you look at the very bottom of the e-mail you received, you have to reply to the auto response e-mail in order to be put into another (very long I'm sure) queue to actually have a person respond to your e-mail.
Good luck to us all... -
My order status has finally changed to 'In Production' (about time) so hopefully I wont have to wait much longer!!!
How is your order Fubie?
Liam, after having your laptop for a week, what is your verdict? -
Brilliant laptop, well worth the wait!
Dan, My laptop was in "work in progress" for around a week, it was then changed to "In production" on the sunday, and it was shipped on the monday! However, I didn't receive it until Saturday - I think it was because of all the snow we had. -
Fubie- I got mine on monday and it is excelllent. Ups were great, very quickly brought it from netherlands to here. My problem was dell saying it had shipped when it hadn't (i.e. saying it had shipped on monday when UPS didn't get it until the thurs... to me thats not shipped)
-
Thanks for the update Liam, i can't wait to get my laptop now! Hopefully it will ship early this week and I'll get it by Friday
-
Just a quick update - my order changes to "Shipped" over night. Any news on yours Fubie?
I found this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=156489 useful - it goes into great detail about what is happening during each stage. You could call them and ask them which part of "In Production" your order is in. -
Just to let everyone know the laptop was delivered (to my fiancees work) this morning.
So all-in-all, Dells original EDD of 22/01 was, if not rubbish, 100% accurate. -
I ordered my 1555 on wednesday 20th Jan, however my expected arrival date is the 16th Feb, does that seem to be unusually longer than usual? What are the chances I will have the laptop in my hands by the end of next week? Thanks
-
i've had a laptop shipped out in 8 days. On the flip side i've had a laptop take well over a month.
May as well cross your fingers but don't get your hopes up. -
Unfortunately, unless you are very lucky my guess is that you won't get your laptop by end of next week.
On the flip side, my 1555 was well worth the wait! Keep us updated. -
Sorry about the delay in posting. I have been out the past two weeks working in Chicago and then Chattanooga so I couldn't post much.
I am glad to hear about the laptop arrivals though. Mine has arrived as well though Dell pulled the same trick I have heard others post about. My unit finally showed "In Production" when I checked all places online. The next day it showed "Delayed" and the EDD changed by over a week. And the next day it showed "Shipped". Once my laptop arrived in the U.S. at the Nashville, Tennessee distribution center apparently FedEx and Dell do not talk. Dell said FedEx had my laptop on Saturday, January 16th, but FedEx didn't show they received it until Tuesday, January 19th. I finally had my wife pickup the package after a failed delivery attempt on Thursday, January 21st. After doing a little digging apparently FedEx Ground doesn't pickup or deliver on Mondays (At least here in the U.S.). Oh well, I have it now.
So far the unit has worked beautifully. How about everyone else? -
I ordered my (shown in signiture) yesterday late afternoon and it changed to Work in Progress last night at 11pm and now its still not changed. Hope its not gonna be too long as the guy on the phone who called to make sure im a student said 5 to 7 days and would not have said that if there was short supply of parts. Or at least I hope not. My EDD is 4th March. Will keep ya guys updated.

then the prompts you need are 4,2,1,1. -

I have been stuck in Work in Progress for almost 2 weeks now for 1645 (RGBLED). I hope I move on from here quickly..
-
Mine has just changed to In Production at 10.30 pm.
Lets hope it dont stay there for months.
