Oh my. When I hit Engadget in the morning and get confronted with:

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/23/mans-xps-m1330-arrives-sans-os-quality/

I start to worry. I mean, there's marginal build quality, and then there's...well, when they forget to burn the BIOS and put an operating system on, you know someone somewhere is telling the line to just get these suckers out the door no matter what.

This will be my first Dell after three Apple notebooks. Now all my friends are asking me (sincerely, not meanly or facetiously) "Are you sure you want one of those??"

And I really have no answer to that.

Yeah the M1330s have been...well not the best. Hence why I'd happy I went with my Vostro/Inspiron thing.

    Relax....

First, if that occurred you would not only be guaranteed your expedited replacement but also, I would bet that Dell would compensate generously for you not to go public with that.

Secondly, you are guaranteed a replacement at the drop of a hat with XPS Support.

I ordered 3 and received all 3. I can say that there is no necessity for any of them to go back. I have looked over each with a fine tooth comb and, if I were to get pcky about anything at all...on one if you look very hard you may see the paint is a bit jaded on a side edge of the cover.

Believe me, noone except me would ever notice that.

There are bad eggs in every new batch of laptops. My Dells have both served me very well and I've never had to use my warranty... so dont let one bad story ruin everything for you. When the macbooks first came out they had really crummy heat control thanks to shoddy manufacturing. It happens to everyone.

First off the person taking those pictures is obviously a moron, so I would keep that in mind when reading the story and looking at the pictures. For starters how does he know that Vista is not installed if the system does not get past BIOS? They seem to jump to a lot of conclusions to make the story more dramatic than it is.

It seems much more likely that the BIOS chip failed after testing, and Vista is there, just not getting booted because there is no BIOS!

Also, the grill is protruding? It just looks like it's slightly bulging from the pictures, maybe if he just pushed on it a little?

Burned Vista Sticker! They all look like that, it's done so you can see the security strip under the sticker, and you know it's authentic. And he left his serial number on the photo originally, but it's been blanked out now. (Moron :)) And he bought Ultimate another questionably decision. :)

Defective Power Button? What's wrong with it? It's not mean to light up all the time, and I do not see anything wrong with the picture.

So overall the guy got a bad BIOS chip, a loose WIFI switch, and a bulging grill. Bad, but not terrible, and hardly worth this much attention. Dell will send him a replacement, or just send a tech out with a new BIOS chip and who can push the grill in!

I am not defending Dell, I just get a little sick of these sensational blog postings that blow things out of proportion. I think CPU whine, and Billy's build quality problems are much more serious than anything this guy encountered.

Hey hey!!!!! Lets watch it with the Vista Ultimate cracks. I have just finally set up my desktop background as the orgasm scene with Meg Ryan in when Harry Met Sally!!! She was gorgeous before the 'Riddler' look surgery.

I like Ultimate and the price (comp) helped alot.

And as for the Vista sticker; it is done intentionally like that. All 3 of my systems were exactly the same.

You'd think that an organization the size of Microsoft could come up with a more attractive way of indicating authenticity than having the OEM scratch a gaping hole in the certificate sticker!

I admit I'm a bit obsessive-compulsive, but that would really annoy me every time I looked at the base.

Oh maybe you dont know...One of the bonuses of Ultimate is a little thing called Dreamscenes where your desktop becomes a virtual video background...

Its great....coming from a chump that is.

No, its a download now and there are a number of dreamscenes available everywhere. Anyone can create their own if they like. It is actually a very amusing feature i would probably qualify a the 'candy' of Ultimate...

LOL oh you are keeping score. I wondered what that was about in the other thread. I was just messing with flamenko about Ultimate. Personally I do not need anything that comes with Ultimate, but if you can get it free I guess it does not hurt.
