I just got a new XPS M1710 and found a number of programs I'll never need. So I uninstalled a bunch of programs, but my boot-up time is still really slow. I was looking for some opinions on whether or not I should just reformat the main partition and start fresh, or if I should just clean up the services and such to get some performance.

I've re-formatted computers before (in fact I just did it to my old laptop I'll be selling just a week ago), so it's not a matter of difficulty. I guess I'm just wondering if I'll see a noticeable improvement in performance by reformatting over uninstalling/disabling services.

    Thanks in advance.

You'll see a huge improvement. The crap computer companies put on your computer slow it down so much. I just ordered a new laptop a week ago. You can bet your ass whenI receive it the first thing I'm doing is reformatting it.

That's partly how dell is able to sell their computers relatively cheaply--they load them up with crapware. I really recommend it, and as NateCohen said, you will see a HUGE improvement. Check out SouthernGirl's excellent reformatting guide stickied at the top of the forum if you have has questions/concerns.

I reformatted mine, and as it took me into the second day to get it all working, I wondered if it was worth it. Now that a week has gone by, I'm exceedingly glad I did it. Fresh clean install, no junk cluttering up the registry, and FAST! Do it. It will be a pain, but it's worth it. Hopefully you've seen this link, which makes it very straightforward: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=67545

    good luck

You will see a large improvement. I reformatted and installed Windows XP PRO on mine and it took approximately 7.2 seconds to load from the Boot screen to the desktop. Just make sure you install all of your appropriate drivers/software needed for your laptop. Some people forget install everything and run into problems.
