Is it really necessary with this computer to reformat out of the box to get rid of the crap? Is there really that much that comes on it? Also, how fast is this computer with the 2.2 ghz processor and 3 gigs of RAM with Vista Home Premium? I am coming off of a P4 with 1.7ghz of power, am I going to be blown away at the speed and lack of slowdown?

It may not be necessary for the casual user, but I would still highly recommend it. flamenko has an excellent guide if you need help.

As for your second question.... yes, you will indeed be "blown away". -
58 sec from off to opening IE......Thats how a fresh install responded..

Hell yeah, When I first got the 1520, It was blogged down by all that mess it left after I had uninstalled everything. Gave it a fresh new format and you could really see the Core2Duo do it's thing. and I'm coming from a P4 3.0HT w/ 2GB Vista and a Coreduo Macbook.

In the guide what does he mean by "you might have to have 3 partitions"? In XP there was only 1 partition which was the C Drive, I hit delete and it combined all of the memory into that partition, and I selected install, it erased and installed XP. What is this about partitions and other drivers you need to install?

for bowlerguy92 download this http://www.killdisk.com

Is there a guide for how to actually and permanently disable the same crap without a reformat? I've tried to do that after having the computer for years, and was not very successful. It seems like it would be way easier with a brand new computer. What are the downsides of this?

Oh nice killdisk isn't restricted to a bootable format now, I can just download it to the comp, very nice.

If you want you laptop to run at top speed and perform at its best I would reformat

My m1530 didn't come with that much bloatware. I just un-installed the offending bloats and directories and did a registry clean afterwards and defrag. Too much hassle to re-install all the programs and then it's not a 100% guarantee everything will work right.
Worth reformating upon arrival?
