My computer is detailed on my signature.
I just purchased the full version of Windows Ultimate and plan on using the 64bit version when when the proper drivers are available. SHould be getting it in a week.
Im currently using the beta (version 2) of Vista Ultimate and with email/IE7/AIM/OUTLOOK/Yahoo messenger/NOD32 and several sidebar gadgets the % of ram being used is @ 46%.
I understand that the way memory is used in vista is totally different than in XP. But would it make much of a difference for me if i sold one of my 1 gig sticks and bought/popped in a 2 gig stick in its place?
thanks

More RAM is always a good thing, however, 2GB still suffices for almost everything. There really isn't a need whatsoever to have more than 2GB of RAM.

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
It wouldnt hurt, but right now it wouldnt be worth the cost, coupled with the fact that 2GB dimms are very expensive, not plentiful, and dont always play nice with others, would make me wait. Eventually they will hit the main stream market, become plentiful, and more stable.
Whats your memory index score? If its over 5 which I bet it is, you wont see much improvement for the investment right now, and coupled with the expense, it only makes sense to wait till you need it. -
Will the e1705 chipset even support more?

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
Good question, I didnt even think of that, 2GB is the max option on the config page, though the M1710 supports 4GB, either way its really not smart choice right now regardless.

I believe that the 945PM chipset supports 4GB, but I agree with all of the above posters, 2GB should be plenty for now.

The 1705 supports a max of 2GB.

Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
The tricky thing is I believe the motherboard has only been tested and approved for 1GB dimms, I'm in the same boat with my desktop, I have 4 slots with a supportted max of 4GB. MSI told me 2GB dimms "might" work, they "might" be unstable, they "might" not even post. "we only offer support for 1GB dimms max for that motherboard, your on your own if you try to use anything else". The higher density chips draw more power, if the motherboard doesnt supply enough power to the slots, at best you will have an unstable system, then of course there is the bios support issue, and also how many pieces of integrated circuit that can be allowed on a module.

2gb is more than enough. -
2gb is enough for sooth running of vsiat. i dont think u need a upgrade now coz, u have 2 gb, 2.16 etc...

2GB DIMMs are very pricey right now.
"If it ain't broken, it doesn't need fixing."
If you can wait, I would say wait. In addition, according to the specs the 1705 can only handle 2GB max RAM as already noted. -

does the e1705 really only support 2GB?
whats the difference between the XPS or even the gateway nx860? I thought they were pretty much the same chipsets?
btw, thanks to all that responded. -
Sigh. Yes, the e1705 only supports 2GB. Get the 9400 if you want 4GB support.
-
hmm, I have an E1705 as well I agree that 2 gigs of ram is alright but I know what he means. with no programs running besides windows vista I am using up about 30% of my RAM, still not a problem.
What do you guys think a good upgrade is to do to an E1705? -
I have a 6400. It has a max support of 2 GB. I believe the E1705/9400 are the same. If you want more you'd have to get an XPS system. I agree with all of the above posters: 2 GB is PLENTY for 99.9% of the things you may need/want to do. Even with Vista. Before I get Vista Home Premium, I'm going to upgrade to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB Stick 667 MHz). But, due to cost, I'm going to wait a bit.

Would a RAM upgrade be a waste for me?
