I LOVE this notebook (see sig) and when I set my OC settings for gaming, it just rips. Pretty screen, lightweight...is there anything besides and SSD that could boost performance sighnificantly and ensure the longevity of my notebook?
All suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.
Thank you,
Snes

No because current SSD drives have very small space. You will run out of space within a year
Also not to mention the insane prices for a decent one -
Hold off on SDD until this computer gets old and you are in the market for a new one. THEN SDD would definitely be worth it.
-
I would keep the specs you have for now.
SSD is way overpriced yet. -
SSD won't boost gaming performance. The best benefits of an SSD are probably the really speedy boot up and shut down times. And come on, 32/64GB? You'll run out of space after 2/4 games. Do you really want to spend the kind of money you'd spend on an entirely new laptop for a 128 GB SSD?
-
I wouldn't touch SSD until they stop selling HDD. Unless your a) rich b) stupid or c) both.
I'd rather shop around for that new half a terrabyte traditional notebook drive myself. -
Since you already have a 7200 RPM drive, you aren't going to see that large of a performance boost. In about a year to 18 months SSDs should be more marketable as they should start to drop in price while gain large amounts of storage space.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Nothing is going to "future proof" your computer. Even if you get the best everything you can possibly get today, it will be bested by the best everything in a year. It's not worth your money to try and "future proof".
With respect to SSD, this means that whatever SSD you get now, there are going to be bigger, fastest, and cheaper flavors out in a year, maybe exponentially bigger, faster, and cheaper. Just upgrade when you feel the need to; none of this "future proof" stuff. -

Hi.
Quite a bit more shockproof, but not future proof.

Buying a laptop is like buying a car......as soon as you start driving it, the value goes down and it becomes obsolete.

And of course you're using it to surf the forums right now......right?

Modems are useful as fax machines

The only way to 'future proof' a computer is not not buy it.

Why do you think magicians have beautiful assistants.

If it's worth you buying an SSD is entirely down to your requirements. It sounds like you don't actually know the day-to-day usage difference an SSD will bring. Very few SSD's on the market today will give you what I think you're after, which is an overall speed increase.
It's also worth noting, for others reading this thread, that in-game performance is not linked with HD or SSD speed. Loading times may be shorter when using an SSD, but this is not guaranteed for every model of SSD out there. Game performance has, and always will be, a product of CPU and GPU speed (looseley coupled also with RAM and bus speed).
If you have a requirement to reduce power consumption in your laptop, an SSD is a good idea. If you need to significantly reduce seek times (accessing random small files rapidly, such as when Windows boots), an SSD is a good idea.
If you want to move big movie files around, most SSD's would be slower than your current HD. The very expensive SSD's can transfer data very quickly. Some even faster than HD's. As already mentioned, you are also going to be very limited in space. 192GB is currently the largest available consumer SSD (and I dread to think how many thousands of pounds/dollars that costs!). 32GB is common and 64GB is coming down in price, slowly.
128GB is where they become useful, in my opinion. Such SSD's are still over £1000 to buy ($2000).
I think the guideline is "If you have to ask if you need an SSD, you don't". -
Future proofing is the Loch Ness monster of the Computer Industry. Many people ask if it exists and all the experts just laugh. -
SSD's are still too small for me and also, MOST are underperforming, big time.
-
Most are underperforming...big time? Can you give an example of any recent release that would assist here.
PSSSSSST...if you can pull up a benchmark of any HD and place it beside that of the MtronPro, Mtron Mobi, Memoright or Samsung SATA II benchmarks in the articles below. -
Wait till Xmas to look for an affordable SSD. Lots of great things are coming to those who wait =). That includes Montevina, the new Inspirons, and also the atom processor for the EEE 900 PC
. Mmmmmm.

I thought the SSD would be the final link in achieving the perfect comp! Guess not...
I do believe the XPS will maintain longevity though.
Thx for the insight guys!

Would an SSD future proof my computer?
