First off, I am in Canada and cannot answer as to whether this has occurred with the US or other countries.
I needed a 'v' key for my Vostro. I contacted Technical Support. I spoke with a fellow Canadian in Nova Scotia...on a Saturday. He suggested that I could use the entire keyboard and told me how to replace it myself. I received an e-mail confirming the shipment before he was off the phone. Our phone call was 10 minutes. The keyboard arived at 1:30pm Monday by courier.
So... today I went a step further. the upper cover of the Vostro has some etching from itsclosing. I called Dell. I got another Canadian Rep. She sent out the panel and said she was obligated to tell me how to replace the other. She told me the piece would be here tomorrow.
CONGRATS DELL! You will get lots of customers back with your annulment of the outsourcing. A year ago the first call would have taken me an hour on the phone, 7 transfers and 3 weeks to complete!

Shoot.....and I just sold my XPS 1340 for this Acer...eheheheh
