When I check up under Properties in My Computer I see "Microsoft Windows XP / Media Center Edition / Version 2002 / Service Pack 2." I ordered MCE 2005 w/ my e1705. What gives?

They are the same thing. It says that same thing on my home computer that has Media Center 2005 on it.

Is there a good explanation for this inaccuracy?

WinXP MCE 2005, V5.1.2715.2812, Update Rollup 2. And so, why the disparity?

I'd guess its referring to underlying XP being Version 2002

Well, like I said I'm just guessing but if it puts your mind at ease mine says the same thing...and given the entries appear on different lines my mind didn't immediately make the connection between MCE and Version 2002

Do you have a ESPN program in your add/remove programs? If you do, you most certainly have MCE, since it comes installed with that on Dells version

The latest version, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, was released on October 12, 2004.

Currently there have been four different versions of MCE.

    * Media Center Edition The first release based directly on Windows XP Professional (2002), this release was only available from Tier 1 computer manufactures.
    * Media Center Edition 2003 Included support for FM Radio, among other changes.
    * Media Center Edition 2004 (codenamed Harmony) released in 2003 and was later part of Windows XP Service Pack 2.
    * Media Center Edition 2005 (codenamed Symphony) The first edition of MCE available to non-Tier 1 system builders, includes support for Media Center Extenders, and CD/DVD-Video burning support. This version also removes the ability for a MCE computer to join an Active Directory domain.
    * Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2 (codenamed Emerald) Released in late 2005, this was a collection of feature updates including support for DVD changers.

Media Center is based on Windows XP Professiona

Dont worry about it. Its just like how Windows 2000 and XP report that its
"Windows NT 5.1" or something. Which we all know we arent on a NT Workstation lol.

Plus the giveaway is that you have "Rollup 2" on there. ;)

I know I have MCE, but why the entires differ confuses me. Well, in any case, I'm probably just being too picky...you know, I've some days before I reach my order return deadline. Until then I'll be bashing every aspect of my new e1705 (like the cheap-looking plastic/metal lip: jk).

edit: "Media Center is based on Windows XP Professional"...I heard different, that MCE is a Home Edition enchancement!

You trying to suggest anything MS does makes sense?

The whole Xbox 360 that wasnt even fully backward compat didnt make sense either.. when Halo 2 lagged etc..

It just means the series line. Windows 2000 and XP showed as NT since it was the NT platform series or so.

MCE core base was 2002, 2005 is just added on top of it all to improve, but the base would be 2002 since thats where it started and so.

Also I hear the 7900 gets just as hot btw..

Thanks, Mysticales. We all know MS is often time up to no good. It's good to know "why" things are the way they are with Win's, MS, Xbox.

7900, as hot...hmm, what else do you know about it's temp. vs. 7800's?

wrt heat issues...having just replaced one system with the other, and not having tested my7800 at all, the 7900 seems a little cooler to the touch than the 7800 did. I am sitting here now with a music video playing in media center at the same time as a movie trailer in real player for about 10i minutes straight and the GPU temp stayed flatlined at 58...

I have been reading on these forums about various things.
    Uses less power.. but still.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=55652

Ah nothing makes sense.. then again.. Least on Windows I know which to use..

Linux makes LESS sense.. how many distros out there? >.< Seems you get the "ideal" one, then a couple months or year later you need to switch out.. sigh.
