I have an X1 and am thinking of replacing my desktop with an Inspiron 9300.

Could I use the DVD-RW from my X1 in the 9300, do they use the same plug-in system?

    Thanks!

The drive unit plugs into an external case, which is then connected to the main X1 unit by a combined USB / proprietary power connector.

I know that the drive unit part can be taken out of the casing and plugged into a Lattitude D610 as the space for the drive and the connector type and position are the same - so I was wondering if I could also do this on an Inspiron; I remember reading a comment about the Inspiron being different from the Lattitude in some ways, such as the connectors.

Ah, I get it, you want to put the burner inside. I am not super familar with the 9300 innards. Sometimes Dell uses special connectors on their drives. It may be possible to swap the connectors. Hard to say without looking. Depending on the drive, it may not line up exactly correctly. Master/Slave can sometimes be an issue. You may want to consult with Dell on this if you have to take the case off. That may have implications for your warranty. As an alternative, you can get a USB power case for like $20 on the internet. Good Luck.
