I have some questions regarding the two:

    1. If I don't game too often (probably just PS2 emulation using PCSX2 -- for Kingdom Hearts, and maybe a few non GPU intensive games), should I get the X3100 or the 8400M?

    2. How much more battery life would with the X3100 in comparison to the 8400M?

    3. Would the temperature difference be substantial enough for someone to prefer the X3100 over the 8400M?

    Thanks!

Pcsx2 probably won't run great on a laptop. What processor does it have?
I think some plugins for it support gpu acceleration and will probably support it even further in the future.

I have 2 m1330's in right in front of me, one has the x3100 and the other 8400m

the x3100 has on average 30 mins more battery life (in powersaver)

the chipset on the nvidia m1330 runs about 5c hotter at idle, GPU also a bit hotter same with CPU... however to touch they feel pretty much identical heat wise when just surfing the web etc

you also get some neat features with the nvidia such as Digital Vibrance Control

I would go with the 8400m gs just for the nvidia features :p
Video playback looks much better after tweaking and stuff

Heat difference shouldn't be noticeable to touch, so it pretty much depends on how important battery life is to you.

One thing to think about.....the 8400 gs has been the center of attention when it comes to defective chips.....just a thought
