Screen attributes like resolution and glossiness are a personal preference. Some people like high res, others do not. Same for glossy screens. If you can get a look at them before buying, I'd recommend it.

I just chose SXGA over XGA. It's incredibly sharp and bright. But ... my eyes are just too old to really read the smaller type size. You can blow up the type, but then it looks weird.

Given the chance to do it again, I would go XGA. But it's really a personal preference.

    FYI, I have a Dell 610 with 1400x1050 SXGA+.

I always had 15" XGA caz doing lots of office work. But since I got 15" SXGA I kind of like it more. Reasons: I am win2k fella, and it has no Clear Type font option, and by bumping res down to 12x10 or 10x7 I am getting real thick "Clear Type" which is very much like it but thicker and easier to read when browsing and reading (even though people call it fuzzy I find it more enjoyable than Clear Type in XP, because it does not have the blurry double effect), and because I usually read from a 3-5 feet distance.
At the same time when I need to do some "big" job in office or see a lot at the same time I just do a quick switch to 14x10 do whatever and go back to usual working 12x10 or when reading at night when laptop is on the shelf 5 feet away 10x7.

This way you've got a ton of options, the only thing is to not get frustrated when getting used to "fuzziness" of the lower resolution which I find to be actually good, caz I see bolder letters which are easier on eyes.

The SXGA or course! Next step after that is the UXGA, which is to die for... :D

SXGA's are the sweet spot IMO between too large and too small...
