Ok, so they mail me the XP CD but when I open it up there is this return sticker and postage in the box with instructions on how to return it to aviod a fee.
I was not informed of this...do I just call and say I'm not sending it back or are those CD's copyable?
-
Most likely you can get out of it, and keep them. Right now, don't contact them. You don't need to worry about it unless you receive an invoice thru the mail. If you get an invoice in a week or two, then contact Dell and explain
a.)you weren't told that you would have to send them back
b.)these are your only back up if something should happen since you've reformatted
c.)you didn't request the CDs but the tech determined that you needed them (this places the liability off of you.)
If they say yes, the CDs are copyable.

Heart,
I don't get what your problem is with me. Whatever it is, this is not the place, and I'm not going to fight with you. Second thing, I did not lie about my problem and I had the same exact thing happen. Considering this is a software issue, you need to call tech support...not customer service, unless you want to pay for the cds.
Now, back to the orginial topic. It is standard if you call tech support to recieve a return label (whenever a tech does work on your pc, he returns the parts to dell). Unless you receive an invoice, you don't have to do anything about it. Even if you do receive an invoice, you'll have 10 days from when you receive it to return the items.

Dell don't send the CDs anymore, so you have to request them. I don't understand it at all except it is a profit thing. You would think that if you paid for a 1500 dollar system, you would get more than a separate partion for backup, which didn't even work for me. Problem is that unless your XP doesn't start or something is drastically wrong, you most likely won't get them. This is the only manufacturer that I know that does this.

question: aren't all dells supossed to come with a CD incase you need to restore? Or do they have the restore as a partition on the drive?
If the second. Cannot you copy this on to a CD and keep it for your self?
I mean there should be a way to have a physical (CD) backup of your OS incase something totally wrong happens to your dirve ... something like one of those nasty viruses!
This issue about formating dells always comes up on this forum, and I never understood what the problem is in the first place. Can some one enlighten me []

If you have enough room on your hard drive (and I know some people hate to waste hard drive space, so you might disagree with this) it's actually quite convenient to create a folder on the C: drive such as "C:WinXP" and just drop the entire contents in there and install/restore from the HD. The benefit of that is also that if you load a program and some features of the OS aren't installed and it prompts you to put in the WinXP disc, you don't need to run to the closet and dig out the friggin' Windows disk so that it can install drivers or utilities that weren't installed initially -- it recognizes the OS was installed from the C:WinXP folder and looks there first.
So I say take the XP CD and copy it to the hard drive, or copy it to another disc. It's not 100% right, but you bought the notebook and a license to Windows XP through the OEM so it's not as bad as copying off a friend or buying known pirated software.

The topic isn't about reformatting. No one needs to lie to get the disks.
Amber I wouldn't have made a extra special post if I wasn't happy with you. These disks are a royal pain to get but only take a few minutes without lying,no charge (there is a charge that has to be entered but It's picked up by Dell unless you bring in the technical department pretending something happened).
The only way to get them is to mention a HD issue but it doesn't have to be made up. All that needs to be said is that if there is a HD problem and I can't turn on my PC or something similar, then I need my disks. No lies. It's the truth! Charges appear only when you go through technical. If It's customer service you will see a charge but voided out by a code Dell enters. If someone should have a charge even though they went this route ,Dell will remove the $23 or similar charge .
Qwester,
Everyone seems to be reformatting their Dell on this forum before they even know what they are doing ,causing more problems. It's fine when the time comes so all the huge amount of junk/bloatware is gone. The processors are so fast anyway that the junk isn't slowing anything down enough to notice requring someone to reformat the second they get it!
I still am interested in a few others. The fujitsu ,basically your model but the new one comming out. I received my new Dell 9300 5 days after I just orderd it, I've had it since tuesday but haven't been up to checking it out yet. If one thing is wrong ,then I'm done buying Dells for awhile.

There is some way to make a disk from what you get from Dell without asking for anything. Does someone know exactly what that is? I could roll my own from the disks that come form MS but why bother.

start-->programs-->and its called something like Dell recovery disk or backup disk. It might be hidden in one of the dell folders, but it is on the menu.

I don't seem to have that anymore. I wonder if it is part of that junk cd/dvd burning thing. I killed that the first day. The partition is still there I suppose I could just back it up somehow. I don't think that there is an image of that anywhere nor a program which would put a computer back to the way it was when you got it using some new disk you go out and buy. I noticed that Hitachi just announced the 7200rpm 100gb drives and once the prices come down a little I plan on upgrading. You can already buy it for the xps.
Assuming you believe all the bull what do they expect you to pay if you keep the disks?

So far, I haven't seen the backup utility on any of the disks, nor on the website. You are supposed to be able to use ctrl+F11 right when you start up the system at the Dell screen, and that will restore your system back to the way it was shipped. Of course for those who are wanting to do a clean install, then this would not be the way to go.
If you keep the disks, it is around 23 for them. If it came down to sending it back or paying for them, I would just pay for them. Considering that it includes the OS, Drivers and extras cd, 23 isn't that bad to pay for it. Its alot better than having to request the cds everytime you want to reformat your HDD and then having to wait 2 days to receive them.

I already have a disk someone at work made which is a combination of mesia center and pro i guess i could just ues that Ghost might be able to back that partition up I don't know. It's too bad as the thing is small enough to fit on one dvd.

Well don't forget nothing actually happened to me yet. One of these days I plan on getting a new disk and I would have to get the image back from someplace. 23 bucks sounds like peanuts to me anyway I am not as worked up as the rest of you. Don't forget that if pushed I have access to the development stuff from MS I could always start from there everything they make is in there, ever see Asian Windows or the keyboards! You haven't lived till you have seen someone who actually knows how to use one bang stuff into the IME.
Really I think all of this is getting too serious for alot of you. I could always get the stuff from that partition simply by writing a program to read it and blow it onto a dvd I am just too lazy for that. I assume if I call them up(I have not) and told them I want to swap the drive they would get me a disk to do it with, if not me then the MIS guy from work so I don't get quite as worked up as the rest here.

Please stop with the personal and moderator comments. I'm not taking these personal, nor do I have anything against you or anyone else on these forums. I'm sorry for my mistakes and I realize that I could have given better advice, but we all make mistakes. On my side, I promise everything is cool between us. All I'm asking is to keep these issues off the forums because they are not constructive help to the topics and other users.
Back to the topic, my HDD did crash, and I had to reformat with XP Home. It's not fair that I paid the money for Pro, and don't even get to use it (which is why I requested the CDs). I'm not sure why Dell has stopped sending the CDs. Maybe they just don't realize how much some of us spend on our laptops or how much we depend on our laptop. I know personally I spend anywhere from 15 to 20 hours on my laptop, and its frustrating when everything crashes. The cds were a big concern for me because my backup partition failed and the backup cd I created was missing files. This summer, I'm taking all online classes, so if something should fail, I am not in a position to send my laptop in for repairs, or can I wait 2 days to receive the cds. This is why I suggest to somehow get the cds (use your best judgement to get them) if you depend on your laptop as much as some of us do.

Would you please, for the love of God, stop posting pointless things in these posts heart? This topic SHOULD be locked due to your excessive posting about how you don't like SouthernGirl or about lying or about personal/moderating attacks. I was hoping to find out a way to get these discs as a backup if I need them later on.
And please stop with the whole "Don't lie, moderators shouldn't be telling people to lie, blah blah blah" bs. Everyone lies, get over it. And if you need to lie to get something that is rightfully yours, so be it.
Please stop flooding these forums with pointless and useless posts, and let the moderators do their job.
As for the others, thank you for the information. -

Look heart generally I don'y lower myself into these foolish fights but you get carried away all I asked was what the disks cost. You caused the next hundred posts. Forget it and get some sleep. This has nothing to do with you.

Like I said before If you call Dell and tell them in a pollite manner that you would like the OS cds just incase you decide to swap out HD at a latter point in time and that you want to be able to have all the software Dell intalled on the note book then they will send you a copy. (at no charge)
Or you can tell them under Dell acc. you have no option to burn a copy then they will send you a copy also. (no charge)
I know both options work I did the first way and a friend did the second and they sent them to him as well.
He did lie but not intentionaly, when he first turned on his notebook after going through setup that was the first thing he was going to do but the option wasn't there, when he turned it off after he got off the phone with dell he turned it back on later it was there and he was able to burn it.
Hope this helps someone... -
Thanks Gargoyle for the info.
That's strange that the dell recovery didn't show up the first time, but that's also good advice in case someone goes in and immediately deletes all the dell software without checking for the recovery. I wasn't aware of the recovery cd until I checked thru my programs, but for someone who depends on everything to be on their desktop, they might overlook that utility.
