Hi, Is that possible to install Windows XP sp2 on DEll Studio 1557 with Windows Vista Home Premium pre installed ??

Getting the error acpi.sys on the blue screen when installing the XP.tried googling it, was told to disable acpi, but that option is not available in this bios.
heard that, we can download the sata drivers for XP and integrate them into XP bootable installation disc?? also, can we press F6 when loading XP, and insert the drivers cd of vista to install the raid drivers and resume the setup with XP??
I tried changing the AHCI to ATA.But of no use !!

    Hope I find a solution here !!

    Regards,
    -A.R.

You cannot install XP and Vista on the same partition you have to partition the HD and then do it

Why do you want XP and Vista both?

    HELLO ebhendra,

you are not alone. I'm sick too. (soory for my english, I speak french in the real life)

I have recieved my DELL studio 1557 yesterday (i7 core, ...), he works "fine" on this shi** of Windows VISTA.
I'have tried to install Windows XP PRO 32bits (compatible with 64bits systems) and I have exactly the same than you !! During install, bluescreen with "acpi.sys error blablabla".
First, I have suspected my RAM was broken (I was very unhappy) BUT now I dont think that's the RAM.
I'm pretty sure that this problem come from the BIOS, the BIOS IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS XP (no matters the version) (yeah that sux).
I think I'll be forced to install Windows 7 to avoid this shi* of Vista.

Maybe it exist a DELL studio 1557 BIOS version compatible with XP ... I know, I'm dreaming ...

If you have any news, post it there PLZ.

OK, to run Windows XP you need to either have your HDD set up in ATA or IDE mode, or have slipstreamed the AHCI drivers to your Windows setup. You probably already have Vista installed, and your BIOS is set to AHCI mode, so you can't just switch it very easily.

Your best bet is to change BIOS to ATA mode, re-install Vista and then re-install XP. This will work fine, but they will need to be on different partitions - which you can setup when you do the installation of whichever OS you install first.

    Hi guys !

So, I have some news about installing Window XP Sp3 on a 1557

I have done a windows xp cd with intel ahci driver incorporated using nlite

juste go here and take the floppy version 32 or 64 bit

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Chipsets&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Matrix+Storage+Manager

there are some tutorials on how to do that using "nlite"

then you have to boot with your xp CD and when it asks you to press F6 to install scsi device, just press F7, it will disable the acpi and the install will go on, no blue screen of death !

Now I have xp Sp3 on my studio 1557 core i7, looking for drivers.

    Hi gordongartrel,

That is great you can install XP on the 1557!! One question. Which file do I exactly download from Intel with the provided link? They are many of them...

    Thanks! :)

the problem is when you disable acpi during install, the XP will always run w/o acpi and some drivers just won't install w/ acpi off.

It looks like you download the 32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility or 64-bit Floppy Configuration Utility depending on whether you use XP 32-bit or XP 64-bit.

I think the tutorial is this one (second post): http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...47626+1260326797427+28353475&threadId=1292979

The nlite driver used is the 6 port. Drivers are here: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...mID=STUDIO1555&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en&TabIndex=

Main problem is ACPI disables many hardware from showing up, like battery and automatic shutdown. You also need to install a Dell Caps Lock application.

So you want to run an OS two releases old on new hardware

Seriously. Let XP die. It ws never a good release to start with...

Stick to 7 w/ XP mode if you really have no choice.

So your blaming Dell because your 9 year old operating system doesnt work on a laptop that was designed around the latest OS out there?

Its like going back to 2007 and buying the latest and greatest laptop then getting mad at Dell because it doesnt support Windows 98..... same thing.

You absolutely sound like Steve Jobs fanboy. In the Mac world, when Apple release new hardware, it's expected to break something. In PC world, we expect backward compatibility. I mean you buy the newest machine today and your copy of DOS6 still boot, right? We all still flash newer bios using the old DOS copy, either that be Win98SE or DOS6 floppy. Well, those are a hell lot older than Windows XP by a decade, and yes it work. Maybe it's not working as well as we expect, but it does work. At the very least it will boot. Well this one don't. I can't fully say that it's Dell fault, it could be Intel. After all, Intel move north-bridge into CPU. But then again some desktop don't have this problem.

I havnt flashed a BIOS be it a motherboard or video card with a bootable floppy in like 3 or 4 years. Its all done in Windows now.
    Comparing DOS6 to WinXP?

Why is it Dell responsibility to keep up with this is what im tring to get at.

    Agreed.

In fact, I bet that in reality, you are all unknowingly very happy that backwards compatibility is only maintained for the last few versions; because if it wasn't then the likelihood is that software prices would be much higher, and take up even more storage space than they currently do.

I tried to install Windows 98 on my new 2007 Dell laptop back in 2007. And it didn't work :(. It was somewhat annoying as I would have rather had Windows 98 than Windows Vista, but then again I didn't really expect success. Although now that I know that too much memory was probably at least part of the problem, I'm curious to see if I could succeed with less memory. Maybe I'll have to try that if/when I next do a reinstall.

Indeed it does. So does Windows 3.11 (drivers are a bit lacking but local desktop stuff works). But not everything in between.

I don't know where the drivers are exactly, but one place to look is Dell's drivers pages for business models with the same components, but with XP support. I did this for XP 64-bit on my Inspiron 1520, and had quite a bit of success, although I didn't find everything. One key thing will be knowing exactly which components you do have; your order confirmation e-mail in conjunction with Dell's driver page for the Studio 1557 (on Vista/Win7) should allow you to pinpoint that.

It'd be useful for anyone else who comes searching for the solution to post your way of getting XP on the 1557 here. As I've found out, it's quite frustrating to Google how to do something, see someone post, "I figured it out!", and then have them not post any details.

Ok so here are the steps to install windows xp pro SP3 on your dell studio 1557 laptop:

    - first you download the ahci driver for your sata HDD here:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18668&ProdId=2476&lang=eng

Note: if you are installing a 32bit version of windows xp pro SP3 than download the 32bit version driver.. (otherwise same method for 64bit)

    - then you download and install nlite (for slipstreaming the driver into xp installation cd)
nLite - Deployment Tool for the bootable Unattended Windows installation - Download

    - make sure you have a working installation cd for windows xp pro SP3 ( or an iso ) and copy the content on your computer. (make sure you take a copy, because nlite will modify the files in the folder you are working with !!)

    - next start nlite and select the folder with your installation files for windows xp pro SP3 and click next. Then only select "drivers" and "Bootable ISO" and click next.

    - Here you should include your downloaded ahci driver so click "insert" -> "single driver" -> and go to the folder where you downloaded (and unpacked) the ahci driver earlier and select the file named "iaAHCI.inf" (it doesn't matter which .inf file you select, because nlite will automatically include the rest, so you only need to insert 1 .inf file).
Next nlite asks you to select your hardware. Select the "textmode driver" option and than select your hardware in the available list.
Hint: It is safest to just select everything in the available list (and you really have to highlight everything with SHIFT or CTRL) so you are sure it will work, otherwise you will just get the famous bluescreen... then click next.

    - you will be asked to start the proces, click "YES". then wait until completed and click next.

    - then select mode: "create image", fill in label if you want to and click "make ISO". Just give the iso file a desired name and place to be stored and click OK. nlite will now make an image file (.iso). When done, click next end finnish.

-THAT'S IT !! You just made your custumized windows installation cd !
    - now if you have nero installed, just doubleclick on the newly created .iso file and burn it on a cd.

    - backup your computer and reboot with the cd you just made.

IMPORTANT: When windows setup is starting and gives the option to hit F6 for non blablalbalbla driver and F2 for .... at the bottom of the screen HIT F7 INSTEAD (don't hit F2 or F6) !!!!! (it is possible you have to use "Fn" + F7 in order to really hit the F7 key and not the second meaning of the button which is "mute" in my case..)

    - Windows should now complete the installation and no bluescreen with acpi.sys error will appear...

    - now the only problem I still have is that I don't find the drivers for XP for my laptop.. Any help would be appreciated !

Ok I have searched the website under home support, but without any succes. Also the drivers for windows 7/vista don't work (as expected). I also sent an email to dell support, I hope they reply soon..
I'll try your method today and post what it resulted.

Ok, so apparently it is impossible to find decent drivers for the hardware in a dell studio 1557 (or at least my hardware). Dell is not responding to my email either.. I only found a driver for the sound, but that's not good enough for me to work with XP so I just gave up.
I'm planning to dual boot my laptop with windows 7 (32bit) and windows 7 (64bit). I refuse to use vista : )

My conclusion: It is possible to install xp on a dell studio 1557 but finding the drivers for xp is rather impossible..

    Good luck finding/creating them !
