Which wireless card did you get? All the big Dell cards and Intel cards have XP drivers.

I found the wireless driver for XP for the 1720. Then again, I got the default dell wireless option so the driver just came from a quick google search and off dell's site itself.

How did you find drivers for the sound card? I'm having trouble with that one. Been trying for a week! Any help is appreciated!

I hope you have found the XP drivers for the wireless card on your 1720, if not, then let me know I finally got my wireless working. You mentioned that you had the xp drivers for the sound card. Can you help me out with that? Have tried just about everything, DELL, Sigma Tel, Intel with no luck.

I'm placing an order for a Dell Inspiron 1720. Of course, it comes with Vista (gag) and I plan on installing XP Pro. Anybody have any particular issues with hardware besided SATA and network drivers? Any luck getting XP to run on this machine? This is the machine I'm getting. If anyone knows where to get drivers I'd appreciate it.

    Inspiron 1720, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
    3GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm

    256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600
    250G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron

Okay, Dell inspiron 1720 xp pro
I made a 1720 take xp pro and like it! The way I did it was first to copy a dell reinstallation cd and integrate the latest intel matrix storage manager drivers and use nlite to stream it and make a bootable cd. That got it where it would install xp pro spk2 and run. Then I used the intel gma 3000 video drivers to get the video working correctly win2k_xp14311.exe. I also flashed the bios to A03 finally I installed the kb888111.exe driver and then installed the Sigmatel driver from Dell R134779.exe. These are what worked for me I also backed them up using driver genius. It took me several days to get this thing working with no exclamation points and I reinstalled the os three times because I had tried so many things I felt it was best to start clean again. The modem was a little bit of a battle too. But getting that sigmatel audio was the real battle. Couldn't believe it when it finally worked I'd tried about 15 different drivers and it just kept giving errors. Thought this might save someone else some time. I did this for a customer I don't own this machine. I kept a copy of the drivers if I have to do it again.

Do you have the correct audio driver for xp on inspiron 1720. I am in the process of putting xp on my 1720 because vista has been getting on my nerves.
Is there any other driver that's not on the dell website that I will need. Such as video driver, network, wireless, ect.

Austin Tech - what happens when you hit the media direct button when a) the unit is off, and b) when you're in XP?

    Cheers,

The Audio driver available for 1520 for Xp should work with 1720 as well... You can try that also...

To put another dumb question (or few) into the thread...

    As per the page
    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1720&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en
I would assume for my system that I download:

Applications: Creative Labs Application (Webcam Manager)
BIOS: Skip, since my 1720 was already A03
CD/DVD: TSST Firmware (Just added yesterday, wahey!)
    Chipset: Intel Driver
    + Ricoh Driver
Communication: Skip? I don't plan on using the modem, and I don't have any of the other devices
    Diagnostics: Skip?
Mouse & Keyboards: Creative Labs Driver (Webcam)
    + Dell Driver (Touchpad)
Network: Broadcom and Intel Driver (and skip the utilities?)
SATA Drives: Intel Driver, skip the app?
Video: Skip, and pray I can find a good driver from someone, now that laptopvideo2go is down?

Sound: Try one of the other drivers (R153908 or R167846?) suggested
Modem (To get rid of the unkown device status): R147115?
    Bluetooth: R159805?

I was also foolish enough to get that Audigy HD software with my laptop, completely not realising that it's only software and not actual hardware (The description wasn't clear enough dammit!). Should I be be too fussed about it? Worthwhile?

Also, are all these drivers able to be slipstreamed, or is it better to install XP, and then use the installers with each of them?

Thanks for any help, I'm just naturally over-cautious (Up to a point anyway :p)

You can slipstream the drivers if you want an integrated full fledged XP Install..... Dont worry adding extra drivers to your XP setup will not make it install the wrong driver for the device.... XP setup will install the correct device driver from its available database of drivers automatically..... Audigy software I do not know since i did not purchase it and besides it just some extra 5 or 10 bucks right ?

    Hello All,

I just reformatted my 1720 back to Win XP, and have been having issues with getting the drivers for the Ethernet and Video drivers to install...

For the Ethernet I used the ones listed on Dell's site, but they say they could not find any compatible hardware...

Then for the video I got them off Intel's site as well as direct from nVidia, but these also gave them same error...

I used "UnknownDevideIdentifier" to find out what is installed, but it doesn't list the model #'s just the makers of these parts...

I want to cry. I installed XP Pro and since than I haven't been able to get my 1720 to access the internet to even get any drivers. I plug in the USB and nothing. Laptop came with this cd "Drivers and Utilities" and it shows me the drivers I need but when I click extract, it does nothing but open and close the command prompt box. I explored the CD and found a folder where all the drivers I need are but, the same thing happens. I think it has 2 do with how big the file is or something. Can someone please help. Point me somewhere. I'm clueless. I'm also wondering if anyone else is familiar with this CD. Its great but won't give up the drivers.

Are those drivers called things like R150593.EXE?
Have you tried copying them to your hard drive and extracting them?
What shows up in Device Manager?
Do you see USB and Network cards listed in there?
If you already have a driver listed in Device Manager, try updating it.
Are the drivers on the Dell drivers CD for XP or only for Vista?
You may have to download the XP drivers from the Dell website.
