An e1705 will come preloaded with vista.
    I want to
    install XP
    delete recovery partition.

I have an xp pro cd that came with my m90. Will that work on the e1705 ?
Do I need to install media direct to use the media buttons on the front of the laptop when in xp ?

How do I go about iinstalling XP ?

Not sure about Media direct buttons but you'll just want to reformat your drive and delete the recovery partition. I would think you could leave the partition with media direct alone and it won't be a problem. Then just put in your XP disc, boot from cd and it should start the install process.

Your m90 cd wont work, the oem key built into it will fail the hardware check. Youll need to obtain xp through normal means.

Actually, AFAIK that disc will work perfectly. It should work with all Dell notebooks. However, you cannot use it since your XP Pro is tied to your M90 (OEM software requirement). You'll have to buy a copy of XP Pro.

wow, didn't realize they forced the OS to only work on original system. That's kind of crappy since you already paid for the OS.

No, it's not crappy. You paid for an OEM copy of Windows, not a retail version. OEM OS software has certain restrictions, one of them being locked to the original system. All computer manufacturers (HP, Dell, etc) that bundle a Windows OS with a system follow the same OEM rules.

So then it's kind of crappy of all manufacturers (I knew dell wasn't the only culprit). You still pay for the OS when you buy the computer.

Actually, you pay for the ability to use the OS on that particular machine. You don't really own the OS. And since manufacturers get a huge price break by buying OEM versions, you just have to live with that limitation.

Well IMO they should tell people that the version of windows is limited to just that computer and they should give the option to not buy the OS or to buy the retail version instead for a little extra.

Of course, people who research it or paid attention to past PC purchases probably will know it's OEM. I got my XP cd separately so I haven't had to deal with OEM versions of OS much.

Anyhoo, I can get a retail version of XP from my friend, how do I install that on the e1705, so that the media buttons work ?

You need to go to the support.dell.com website and download all the accompanying software for the machine for WinXP. It's all there...install and buttons, video, sound, etc should all work

Tell them you don't agree with the licensing agreement for Vista and they'll offer you $75 if you send the Vista disks back. They even pay for the shipping...
