I was wondering whether or not to install the XP x64 edition of Windows on my computer to utilize the full power of C2D. I heard that it might cause driver/software related problems, is that true? I know vista is coming out, but I'd rather avoid it if possible because I think it's still a beta-ish OS.

    Thanks,

Yeah, the drivers for XP x64 are really lacking and such, so you'd have quite a few problems with XP x64.

The lack of support was the reason XP x64 never really gained much popularity.

Other than drivers, would I be able to run my software ok? I think i can get 64-bit versions drivers from the dell website: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=XPS_M1210&os=WXPX&osl=EN

They missed a few though, like video card, web came, and such. Does anyone know where can i get the missing ones? I was AngryMob's post about running XPS1210 with Vista. He didn't say where did he get the missing drivers though...

    Thanks,

It's other things that might not work.

For instance, my 3d software works in 64-bit, would render faster, but Quicktime does not work and I use Quicktime a lot.

It's my impression that the "entire" XP x64 computing process would be a little sketchy for reasons like that.

Consider dual booting, or, just skipping 64 bit for now unless you know you have a specific thing you do that would benefit. It's not installing x64 is just going to rock your world.

It's future is in things like 3d/video editing benefits, scientific apps, more cinematic game play and addressing large amounts of ram.
