Well boys and girls, it arrived today, finished doing a fresh install of XP and everything is working fine, there were some drivers that did not load but that was taken care of easily. So far I love it, the keyboard flex is definately there but I am not a hard typer.
Thanks for all the help and answers to my questions, and a great review by NBR.
    Thanks again
    Josh

    Got mine too :D

I'm not sure I "love it", it's definitely of high enough quality, screen rather nice, speakers TERRIBLE (much worse than I even imagined), keyboard rather excellent, touch pad too small, basically everything you read in the reviews - the only thing was that it ran warmer than I expected.

There are minor issues, but the biggest issue with me is probably that I don't really need a laptop so small - it's still of a comfortable size to look at and read from, but I'm finding that it's so small that it's just overkill - I mean, small is good, but it doesn't need to be that small, especially if it makes it so thick! The only reason the thickness is really an issue is that since the palm rest is so small, if you're typing on a desk your wrists won't be at quite an optimal angle if you rest them.

Still, great laptop all in all for a very reasonable price (at least what I got it for) - definitely going to give it some more time :)

Hmm...I ordered mine the 5th and just got it today as well. The blue lights are really sweet. I have DBAN wiping the drive right now.

Anyone have trouble repairing MediaDirect after a wipe 'n install?

Mine came too!! ... I ordered it on 7/1, and it was supposed to ship on 7/11 but shipped on 7/5! Came in two days, too.

I have the opposite reaction to the size as sureshot. I was terrified that 12" would be too small, since the resolution is the same as on my sister's 14" widescreen ... but the screen is absolutely lovely. The glossy and widescreen options are really fantastic on laptops these days. I don't notice the small size of the screen, and WOW the weight is perfect for carrying around school! who knew I could get a performance machine that would be so portable ... not a sony SZ, but certianly better than the 6 pounders most students lug around.

I got mine with minimal components (only major upgrade was the gfx), and I find mine runs pretty cool and the battery life is 4 hrs on the small one with brightness down. It gets a bit toasty on the lap, but that's why there are little rubber feet on the bottom ... to help the heat get out ... I expected to deal with cooling issues on a small computer this powerful, and yet I can still comfortably use it on my lap. The palmrests have never felt warm at all.

I tend to type very hard ... I find the whole keyboard rather soft to be honest, though my typing is markedly more accurate than on an old desktop keyboard. As for the localized flex, I don't notice that, and I'm sure I can fix it if I need to. Someone linked a site which explained how ... it flexes because of a misplaced cord beneath the keyboard, and you can guide the cord to the right place to even it out ... I don't even care.

Installing Vista tonight -- I hear there's not official nvidia 7400 go drivers yet, but someone souped a driver up to run Aero, and I look forward to previewing how it will work.

niice ! im planning to get myself an m1210 sometime soon once a good deal from dell comes up or some type of xps coupon. i just hope i can deal with the small screen but everyone is giving the m1210's keyboard great reviews. if no deal comes up i might go with an asus w7j for the better screen and at a reasonable price. i still have no idea what to get.. = \

I got mine yesterday and I'm ready to do a clean install. I didn't get the MediaDirect CD with mine so I contacted Dell to have it sent. I also would like to know if there are any problems repairing MediaDirect.

    Hi all'

New here. Just ordered my XPS M1210 (2GHz proc, 2Gmem, Nvidia card) to replace my old Thinkpad X23 which is starting to die on me. I got the 1210 partly thanks to this awesome site and their members. I have a question and I appologise if it's a groaner
Why do a clean reinstal? is it because Dell puts so much crap in their image install?

    Thanks anticipated

Yeah Dell puts a ton of junk on their systems along with alot of useless settings. Most of these issues can be fixed by going through and deleting/optimizing your system manually, and using some programs to optimize things. Alot of people choose to do a complete wipe and re-install of their entire drive to just start fresh.

Kinda interesting the differences that I've noticed between Dell in the US and here in Japan.

Not really sure why, but my system wasn't really loaded w/ bloatware at all...still reformatted just to make sure, but odd, nonetheless. The other thing is that they shipped all the required CDs with the thing (including XP Pro, webcam drivers, Media Direct reinstall disc, etc,), as well as a fancy shmancy CD holder and bag for all the accessories.

Was this the case for any other non-US m1210 buyers?

Oh yeah...has anybody else noticed that the headphones they ship w/ the thing are really friggin loud?

    Thanks!

    HH ;)

All the reinstallation CDs and special accessory carrying bag comes with all US models. A clean install is very easy to do, and I highly recommend doing it. You can then choose which applications to keep or get rid of.

HokkaidoHillBilly - One thing I did notice was that you have DDR2 533MHz. The US M1210 notebooks are only availabe with DDR2 667MHz. Is DDR2 533MHz still an option now from Dell Japan?

Yeah, I noticed that I'm one of the few w/ 533MHz DDR2 as well. When I placed my order Dell Japan was running a few specials, and 1GB as 2 sticks for the price of one stick o' 512 was the deal d'jour.

Very seriously considering bumping that up to 2GB as soon as I can scrape up some money though, as I found a place about 30 min away that sells no-name 1GB@533MHz DDR2 for about $100 a pop. Full on 667 is sorta outta the question for me as there're pretty much only 3 brands available here (Buffalo, IO-Data, and some other maker...can't remember off the top o' my head right now) outside of Akihabara, and they all run around $300 / 1GB. Um...thanks, but no thanks.

As far as the MediaDirect install disc, according to the Dell Japan support website in anycase, it's the same disc that has all the drivers, notebook system software and diagnostics on it. You have to:

1st) Install Sonic Cineplayer & reboot
2nd) Install Dell Media Experience & reboot
3rd) Reboot & press f12 at the Dell boot-up logo. Pop in the "Drivers & Utilities" disc & select "boot from CD/DVD". At the prompt, type "CD\MD2", then "repair" at the next prompt. Select "OK" & follow the instructions & you should be in business.
