I can't seem to be able to play dvds on my XPS 1210. Every time I insert one into the dvd drive, Windows Media Player 11 says that my graphics card and/or my display can't play that kind of copyrighted material. Has anyone else encountered this problem before? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

also, i am attaching the computer to an large external display, don't know if that is relevant......

If I remember correctly, WMP10/11 cannot play DVD's unless you buy a decoder that is compatable with it. You have to play DVD's through the DVD software that comes with the laptop. For the 1210, I believe it's SonicDVD?

Hmm ok I'm at a loss, because I've just realised that WMP11 won't play DVDs for me either. They play fine in Power DVD though (which means they should now play in WMP too). This is odd, because I also can't get Media Centre to start now. I've only noticed it since I've installed Visual Studio 2003, but yeah it's really odd. Something for me to play with tomorrow, I'm too tired to think right now.

Can you play DVDs in other programs such as Cyberlink PowerDVD, Cinemaplayer?

I know WMP11 does not come with a decoder, but you should be able to watch it using WMP11 as long as you have another dvd program which has a decodered installed on your laptop.

No, I was not able to play dvds in any of the software that came with the computer. However, I tried VLC media player and it works fine now.

I can play DVD's on my WMP, but they dont play right. It dosent use the aspect ratio of my widescreen display, even in full screen mode there is black on all sides. I just use the Dell Cineplayer. It works perfectly, I just watched Donnie Darko and 2 episodes of Battlestar Galactica on it earlier today.

I had this exact same problem a few days ago. I reformatted my M1210 as soon as I got it, and instead of reinstalling the Sonic player that came with it, I installed Power DVD and forgot about it. Day before yesterday I tried to play a DVD for the first time, and Power DVD gave me an error. WMV also gave me an error. I reinstalled Power DVD. No dice. I then installed the sonic player, and now I can watch DVDs.

So I guess I'll try Sonic. Cheers for the heads up.
