I am very tempted to get the 1210. However, I am concerned that the 12 inch screen might be too small. My roomate has the 700m and I used it for over an hour one day and was totally fine with it. However, I am not sure if an hour is a long enough period to analize it.

Because of price and the fact I want a dedicated video card I am going to get a dell. This leaves it to the E1505 or XPS 1210 (D620 is too much). I am using the coupon through EPP and and 1210 is actually in my price range.

So if you had to choose between the two, which one? I am leaning towards the 1210 because I will be bringing this to the library and class everyday and think the E1505 will be too big to carry everyday.

BTW, I realize comparing a 12 inch and 15.4 inch notebooks is like comparing apples to oranges but as stated above these are the only two dell notebooks in my price range.

    Thanks

How about a bigger latitude or precison system (EPP+30% works on them too) ?

Well, you can get the base config for around $900 w/ 7400 after 30% coupon for the XPS M1210. It gets my vote. If your going to be carying it everday you will want a 4lb notebook instead of a 6lb one. Its also built better than the E1505. Looks better also. And If you don't mind me asking.. what is your budget for this notebook?

I would go with the 1210. I think that there is no reason to go with a bigger laptop except if it has better specs. Screen too small, how about an external screen.

I was really torn between the 6400 & the 1210 as a replacement for my Inspiron 8500, but in the end decided to go w/ the small form factor.

I love the 15.4" screen on my 8500, but the thing is like carrying around a brick back & forth to work everyday, and after taking a look at both models at a kiosk lately figured I could live w/ the smaller screen. And hey, the built-in cam is just too cool!

Guess all I need for it to do now is show up on my doorstep (hopefully) tomorrow night! Woohoo!

    Ordered Config:

T2500 2GHz Core Duo (no T2600 available on Dell Japan's website)
    1GB (512x2) RAM
    100GB HDD @ 7200 RPM
    GeForce Go 7400
    Built-In Webcam
    9-Cell Battery
    a/g/b Wi-Fi + Bluetooth
    Japanese Keyboard
    Win XP Pro Japanese
4-Year Complete Care including theft protection (what can I say...we're planning on having kids soon *grin*)

210,000JPY, or roughly $1,800USD w/ tax after coupons (yeah...we pay just a wee bit more over here than you guys in the US)

I'm so psyched! It's like I'm moving from a bigassed old Lincoln Continental to a new NSX! (or whatever car related simile works for you here) Woohoo! ;)

^ So whats the price difference between the E1505 (6400) and M1210 in Japan? In the US, there is a couple hundred dollar difference.

I'm buying the m1210. With maxed processor (2.16 dual), 100 gig 7200 rpm hd, 2 gig ram with room for 4 gigs, at under 1700 with tax (this is with the epp coupon)... I dont think i can go wrong. Even though it will be used mostly for art, I will probably get over it's small screensize.

Yea I have decided on the 1210.

I never thought of an external monitor but that would solve my problem about screen size if I have a problem at all. I have already decided on the dell 17 flat monitor; its only 180 and has very high reviews.

Yeah I have the 17' ultrasharp from dell, looking at this on it now, its very very nice. Only thing about it is it takes about 5+ seconds to get to full brightness, its a little dim, but then lights up quick. I dont know if this is specific to what company's LCD it is, or if its common of all LCD's. But other than that its great.

Excellent choice. The portability and power of the 1210 with the external monitor for the room is the best compromise of size, cost and portability.

The draw of the laptop is the portability and balance of power. It is an excellent desktop replacement given its hardware specs.

It is a chore to carry anything bigger than 14.1"...ESPECIALLY, on a plane or train!

Now, your next question should be posted in the Accessories section:

"What do you carry your XPS 1210 in?"

Since the coupons/deals are a lot better on the Inspirons, the 6400 (they don't offer it under the E1505 moniker here) is normally quite a bit cheaper than the m1210...probably by as much as (the equivalent of) USD200-300.

I'm really glad I decided to go w/ the system I got though, and I've defo turned a few heads w/ it at work already. "Man, that thing is small!", "It's got a what in it?", and "Can I play w/ it a little?" are just a few of the comments I've got.

As far as the screen size, I do have to admit that it's been an adjustment, but really not that big of a deal...although when I look at my old Inspiron 8500, it seems like some sort gimongous monstrosity. *grin* And the screen itself...wow...as I read somewhere a few days back - "stupidly bright"! ;) Defo puts my previous matte 15.4" SXGA screen to shame, and I notice right away how dark it is compared to my new rig.

Oh yeah...as far as what I carry it in, I have both a Targus backpack (for normal back & forth to work & when I take my bike) and shoulder bag (for business trips & when I have to drive) that I got for my 8500, and while the m1210 is a little small for those bags, it still does the job. What's really amazing is how much lighter the bags feel now, even with the power brick and all the other stuff for it.

All in all, for those of you who've ordered this little beast, you're gonna love it! And for those of you who're on the fence about it...pull the trigger already...you'll love it! ;)

    HH ;)

i want mine i want mine i want mine and i want it right now! I hate dell right now, thanks for running out of printers and making me wait a whole week more! Im sure once I get the thing ill love it and ill love dell again. BTW about adjusting, I went to the brand new Best Buy 1 mile away from my house :) and looked at a 12' notebook. It wasnt a widescreen, but after looking at it I know it will be an adjustment from my 17' dell ultrasharp. Once I get mine ill give my full opinion on the screen. And like Hokkaidohillbilly said, just by the thing already, I dont have mine yet and im in love with the thing!

got my m1210 tuesday night and i was pleasantly surprised with the screen size. It is quite an adjustment from 15'' UXGA on my Inspiron 5150, but it isn't small by any mean. The size is just perfect for me and I am happy I didn't go with Latitude D620/D820. Well, I needed to rearrange toolbars in Firefox a little bit to free up as much space as possible, but otherwise life is good.

After getting used to the 1280X800 12.1" on my M1210, the 14.1" on my Compaq looks ugly and the text looks kind of weird & bloated ;)

Yup, thats exactly how I felt about my 17" Ultrasharp after I got used to my 1210. It wasnt "Ultrasharp" compared to the 1210, it looked blury and bloated. The 1210 truly does have an amazing display.

A notebook with a 15" screen is too big and heavy to carry around every day. My vote goes to the XPS 1210.

when i got my m1210, i was very surprized in the size of the screen. it was actually bigger than i expected. i needed almost no time to adjust to the screen, and i love the brightness and clarity of this screen.

its a hell of a machine for its size/price, I honestly think its THE best general purpose notebook on the market right now, it might not be verbatim "thin and light" but its quite close, and outperforms most 15.4's , and on top of that with a few tweaks, its a surprisingly cool running machine

Draft-N is only really useful if you own a Draft-N/Pre-N router. You cannot take advantage of the higher speed otherwise. As far as better range, I have read mixed reviews (and personally seen mixed effects) with Draft-N cards and Mixed Router (b/g, or just g).
