I pretty much maxed out my order leaving my price at about $2470. I ended up calling up because I needed it shipped to an APO box and after all the discounts they give over the phone, it ended up running me just under $2100. The university discount is pretty nice if you qualify.
The Bench specs at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3787 put this laptop equal performance with the Geforce 7600 video card with it's 8400...nice...putting this pretty much as the best small size laptop out there. The only other choices is by going to a 14" and finding a 8600. If you go 15 inch...you'll be able to go for that 8800 or 8900 very shortly.
I also like the slot loading drive...no more accidental disk ejections![]()

For < 15", the most common card will the the 8400M GT or less.
For 15.4, it will be the 8600M GT.
For > 17", it will be the 8700M and the 8800.
I don't know how you even got the notion that the 8900 will be available....even "shortly" -
They gave you discounts over the phone? Different ones from online?
I can get the 6% (or 12% with 3 or 4 year warranty) university discount. Is that all you used? I really want this laptop, but it's so expensive! -
the 7700 is installed on a few laptops that are 15" out there...bit hard to find them but they're out there...ASUS G1-AK024C is one of them. You can modify a 15" dell computer with a 7800...but that's beyond a 15" actually supporting one.
The Znote 6324W is a 14" and has a 8600...not a common laptop, just powerful.
Provided that the cards are similar in size per hundreds generation, you might see a 8700 in a 15 inch, but if there's too much heat or it is actually larger...that may never happen like you said.
8800...I'll just agree with you that we may not see that one unless by chance some company custom builds it into the laptop. I see that around Okinawa where I live currently with 15" laptops with 7900 built in...they're just way to expensive and from one of my co workers who owns one...goes through the battery like there's no tomorrow.
as for the 8900...there's no way to tell when that will come out...maybe nVidia will release it before they even get their drivers fully vista functional like the did releasing the 8800 with no video drivers.
Anyhow...hopefully we'll see some nicer ATI cards in the future...I'm sick of nVidia's cards doing the horizontal tearing under every condition, every program, ever version of windows, under every card I have ever owned, even with vsync on....that's piss poor quality.
As for the phone price...it seems like their pricing is totally different than online. The guy I spoke with totaled it and I looked a gift horse in the mouth and asked. We went through the config and the prices were just different so oh well. I priced mine with the 6% discount /w 1 year coverage and 12% with 3 and the 1 year was still cheaper by about $90. On the phone, the 3 year was cheaper by $7. -
Wow, trebuin, the price was nice!
Do you mind PM some details on that? I am trying to get one for my college too. Thanks! -
