hey guys , i just received my laptop 2 days ago, love everything about it, but the optical drive  ,, its not only loud when inserting/ejection the disk or starting up the windows, but also when its reading the disc :S

is there any way i can get rid of this problem, its soo annoying, i know there is no permanent solution. i tried inserting a blank disc, bt it still doesnt solve the problem

i was wondering , is there any way we can disable the optical drive, so it dont make any noise

    Thanks in advance

what BIOS version does it say you're using (look under the Dell logo when you turn the laptop on)

they updated it, and the latest one fixes some of the CD issues..

well then replace the drive.......... i dont think theres a software or bios tweak for reducing the noise of these drives. or just ignore it and use optical drives only when necessary

You'd better believe it'll have the same "problem." I don't know if you're new to slot-load drives, but they tend to be a bit noisy, as the cd/dvd has to be pulled in and spit back out. I've got a Mac mini with a similar drive, and it makes pretty much the same noises as my 1330.

I'm gonna count myself lucky because I have a Panasonic drive in my m1330 and it's not very noisy at all -a little when a disk loads or unloads. While reading the disk it makes less noise than any tray loader that I've owned...

My Panasonic (Matsu...) is also quite reasonable, though it does make some noise when ejecting or feeding.

Update your BIOS, and see is that helps.

Personally, I prefer the slight motor noise over the loud click generated by pushing in a tray-based notebook drive.

if you don't mind giving it up for the sake of silence, you can disable the Module Bay Device in the BIOS.
